Hunter H31 Niagara Falls
I have a Hunter 31 which I am fairly unfamiliar with. There seems to be something missing where the main sail tack connects to the boom. There is a large earring in the tack, but the only thing available to attach it to on the boom is a reefing hook, and as you might guess, this gives really poor sale shape. Something must be missing in the way of hardware. There seems to be a set of attacment holes for something like a D shackle on the boom, but I have yet to find anything that will fit it and be long enough to go through the earring. Does anyone know how the sail tack is supposed to attache to the boom on this model? If there is a missing piece of hardware perhaps you can direct me to it in a WM catalog? Thanks in advance.

Go to rig-rite

You don't give the year your boat was made, but you probably have a Z-Spar mast and boom. Visit www.rigrite.com , surf around and find your boom. You should be able to find every single piece of hardware attached to your boom and mast, including the tack shackle. I had to order this same shackle a couple of years ago. There's nothing at west marine that will work. P.S. The "earring" is called a tack cringle.

That did it...

Wow that was fast. I continue to be amazed at what a great resource these forums are. As far as the missing info, it is a 1985 Hunter 31. The mast/boom are made by Isomat, which is now out of business, but Rigrite stocks parts. Rigrite lists the NB-24 as the system on the 31, and it does indeed look correct. They also sell the "tack shackle" to connect the boom to the tack "cringle". So now I have the source for the part and I know the proper terminology. Thanks so much! Paul

Don't try to find it anywhere else....

I looked for this tack shackle at every marine store available and though they look exact, they are all slightly too narrow to fit over the gooseneck. Mine was $9 from rigrite....the only source.
