How strong is the factory bow cleat?

It seems to me that, since the two bollard pedestals are not truly connected by the wooden dowel, they could be broken one at a time under sufficient strain. I am considering replacing the single bow cleat with a pair of typical, sturdy open-base horn cleats, one on each side.Am I mistaken about the strength of the factory cleat? I love the looks of it and would rather keep it, IF it can truly be trusted. And obviously the same goes for the two stern cleats.

Cleats are usually very strong. What matters more is how they are attached. How large are the backing plates?

Thanks Brian, for the sake of this conversation let's assume that the backing plates are two feet square, and two inches thick, solid stainless. ;)Yes, cleats are generally very strong, that's their job. But the cleats on a Vega are somewhat unique. It is them and only them that I am interested in knowing more about. Firsthand accounts of Vegas riding out storms at anchor (or sea anchor, etc) would be nice ... or, on the other hand, reports of Vega cleats failing under extreme strain. Either one would be helpful. Thanks again!

I weathered many Force 8 gales on Cin Cin in the Florida Keys and in the Bahamas aboard Cin Cin, didn't get much sleep and was more concerned with chafe. I still have the original cleats, although I no longer anchor out here in the Baltic. MSG Frank Gallardo Jr.

We moored Journeyman where there was a five mile fetch to the west. In the fall some night there would typically be a strong cold front with 50 knot westerly gusts. We’d find seaweed on deck. Original cleats. An oversized nicely polished chock with big bolts. Lots of chafing gear on the pennant.  Never an issue.

Yet another of my embarrassing running aground stories. Some years ago I ran hard aground on a bank 7miles off the east coast of England. A lifeboat passed a line to me which I made fast to the forward cleat. The lifeboat had to drag the boat over the hard sand and the forward cleat survived but one of the bolts broke. The backing plate was OK and the wooden dowel.I obtained a spare bolt and soon fixed it back. The cleat has served me well since then. I do have a couple of spare cleats just in case.Mike

Thinking about the cleat problem, the studs at the bottom of the legs are only 8mm. In my case one broke the other held under extreme load. The deck was not damaged. If the studs had been thicker an extreme load could pull away a portion of the deck and in retrospect I think I would rather have the stud break. In extreme conditions a towrope/anchor line could always be attached to a bridle led forward from the after cleats and additionally attached to the base of the mast.Mike On Monday, 6 November 2017, 13:14, "mikeandv@... No, not the base of the mast, that would simply pull the mast down.
