How NOT to wallow out your tiller

I'm sure I'm not the only one with a wobbly tiller due to lashing the tiller to keep the rudder from banging in the waves. I removed the tiller and found that the holes had been redrilled once already. Both sets of holes were wallowed out on just one side. Closer inspection revealed that it's the end of the bolt where the threads are that enlarges. The other end was OK in both cases. The problem is mostly that the smooth "shoulder" part of the hext bolt is too short, and the threads dig away at the aluminum. The supplied hex bolt is 3 inches. I bought a 3-1/2" SS hex bolt and cut off a half inch of the threads with a hack saw. This gives about 2.25" of shoulder which is perfect! Tip: put two nuts on the bolt before cutting off the end of the threads. Remove one nut to straighten out the burrs and file the end threads smooth, then remove the other nut. I can't guarantee that the holes won't wallow out, but surely not nearly as much. I'm making a rudder lock (like Rick Webb's in the photo forum) as well. ...RickM...
