How much to flip an O'day 22

I was just wondering if an 1970's O'Day 22 could ever flip over while under sail. What sort of gusts or winds would it take to do so? This is my first bigger sailboat so I was just wondering. I have had the winches under water once way past the tracks freaked out my passanger lol. Thanks

Flip?

I'm guessing by flip you mean to completely roll over? Normally that wont happen because the center of gravity is so low on these boats. It could happen if let's say you have too much sail and a good burst catches you on the broad reach and the water current is flowing the opposite direction and when the boat is set on her ear the current pushes the mast and sails under her. Usually though if you loosen the sheets she'll stand back up....USUALLY. I have not sailed much in the Oday 22, but have watched them on the lake with me. If the wind gets around 25mph most have headed in. I would argue that if you have the proper complement of sails that the 22 could handle it though. It comes down to skill and set-up as to what you can handle, as much as what the boat can.God Bless and smooth sailing

Knocked down

Hi Scott;In my first year with my 22 foot O'day centerboard I had the unpleasant experience of getting caught in a line squall out on the bay with the mainsail up (not reefed). The wind spun the boat around and knocked her flat on her stbd. beam. I recall standing on my toes on the stbd. locker in the cockpit and staring at the mainsail as it flopped into the water.I quickly came to my senses, and let the mainsheet go and she came right back up nice as can be.
