How much paint?

Since this is my first full year to have my boat, I am looking forward to Spring and putting my boat back in the water. My question is, how much bottom paint is needed for a Hunter 28.5? I am asking this with the idea of planning my finances. Of course there are still a couple of rust spots I need to tend to and a couple places where the paint is flaking a little. But the initial question is how much paint should I expect to use? Thanks!

Hi Brian, I purchased two gallons for our H28...

and I used all but about a quart. It took a gallon and a half for two thick coats, then another quart to finish the bottom of the bulb keel, and where the support stands rested against the hull, while it was in the travel lift. Terry

Free advice

They say to overpaint the edges because they get a lot of wear, but in fact the waterline doesn't need an over-treatment. You wind up with layers of paint that don't slough off. So go lightly to the waterline. Don't tip the can over, either. At these prices, you'd be better off christening the boat with a gallon of 40-year-old Scotch.

And what kind of paint???

Just bought my boat (290) this past year. This will be its 4th season. The yard where it was kept(many miles away) maintained it for the first owner, and they used a standard-looking blue bottom paint, which is in excellent condition, except where some of it (just aft of the keel) has flaked off, exposing the gel coat. Can I just touch this area up before painting the entire hull? Can a different color ablative paint be applied directly over what's on there now? Who's paint can/should be used?

Hi Gregg, I did the hull of our P42 this past...

summer much like I did on our previous H28. I changed from blue to black ablative from WM. I scraped off all the loose paint, then feathered the peeled off sections and sanded the entire hull with dry wall sand paper from Home Depot. Applied three coats, which should last about three seasons. While I was at it I cleaned and buffed the prop and shaft, installed two fresh zincs and then applied two liberal coats of Desitin (used for diaper rash) to the bright metal. It helps to prevent the build up of marine critters. The yard where I did the work advised me that from their experience black ablative seems to hold up better than blue, plus it has a classier look. From my experience..

I've come to count on a gallon per coat for my H33. This leaves about a quart left over for touch ups (jackstand pad spaces, etc.) And like it was mentioned in an earlier post... Don't knock the can over! That stuff is like liquid gold when it comes to the price!

One Gallon

Depends where you are. I keep my boat in brackess water in NJ and get 2 season out of one gallon. That is one coat on my H28.
