How much paint for H34

I'm having my bottom taken down to the Gel-coat so I'm going to need both barrier and bottom paint. The painter is planning to do 3 coats of barrier and 3 coats of bottom paint plus a 4th coat at the waterline. My question is how many gallons of each should I plan on and is it normal to put on 3 coats of the barrier paint?

It has normally taken one gallon of bottom paint to do the hull, and a quart to do the keel. Multiply these amounts by the number of coats you plan to put on your boat to arrive at a total amount and cost.

I purchased 3 gallons of Trinidad. I used an airless sprayer.two coats.three at waterline. Used 2 &1/2 gallons.

Thanks Dan. Is that true for the barrier paint as well? Do you use the barrier paint on the keel?

Spray, did you dov your keel also?

That includes everything below waterline. Spraying uses more material. But it is super quick and smoother.

Bottom Paint

One of the bottom paint company had on there web site the formula for figuring
out how much paint per size boat and maybe it was sea hawk.
So what paint did you decide and who is doing all your work,the painter wanted to do a barrier coat on my boat but because it is pretty new 2007 and the bottom is in excellent condition I decided just 2 coats of bottom paint and got 3 gallons and half gallon left.

Your first coat of barrier paint ( I used Interlux 2000) will take a bit more than 1 US gal. Subsequent coats a bit less. Put on 4 coats over all - hull and keel- plus an extra 1 on the rudder. I used 4 gal. I would recommend at least 3 of the barrier coat. I use VC17 so only on coat because I was only in the water for 3 months then out for the winter. Added another coast of VC17 this spring

Hi Nick.. I'm going to use George the Painter over at SafeCove (All American). Unless you know something I don't... Haven't decided on the paint though many here are suggesting the Pettit SR....

Based on the great feed back... I think I'm going with 3 for the Barrier...The Interlux sounds fine for this and 3 full coats + 1 waterline coat for the Paint. -Jon

I have heard George is good but used some one else and he was steve and he was good also but he problems working at safe cove with the owner and he needed more insurance.
I only did 2 coats bottom paint sea hawk but also was told the SR was good from many sailboaters,I did not want to remove my bottom paint down to the
gel coat and that is why I did not use the SR.

Hey Jon...

Put a different color paint on as your first coat over the barrier coat (blue over red base or red over blue base) so you will know when your additional coats have abalated off and need to be repainted.

The coverage you get will be based on the paint/barrier coat's viscosity and how you apply it. Check with the Mfgr for approx sq footage of coverage.

My calculation is with a brush to cut in the water line and around the keel/hull joint as well as any thru-hulls. Then all further painting is applied by roller. Use one designated for the marine paint you choose or a cheap home-type may fall apart from the paint's solvent vehicle.
