How much paint / epoxy barrier do I need?

After acquiring my Hunter 28 this summer, I finally hauled her out on the hard Nov. 6th. It's time to bottom paint. Hasn't been painted in 4-5 years. I was able to remove most of the old ablative paint with a pressure washer and I so far, I haven't seen a single blister. Questions: 1. What is the ballast material? (Just curious, my last old boat was lead, I assumed this was, but I hear it could be cast iron. Hope not.) 2. How much paint do I need? 3. I'm in fresh water, Northeast Tennessee, a high mountain lake, so it never gets very warm, but never freezes over. Slime, but not much else. What paint would you old salts recommend? 4. Even though I found no blisters, should I apply an epoxy barrier coat? Again, how much is required? Thanks, Robert Banks S/V "Susan Bee" 1992 Hunter 28 Watauga Lake, Tennessee

Check Interlux site.

Interlux has a calculator. I stuck it in Related Link. In case you do not have Adobe a 30' sailboat requires approx. 5.5 quarts for two coats of bottompaint. You can also use their calculator for epoxy barrier-coat. Over the years the consensus has pretty much been that a barrier-coat is not required if you do not see blisters. In other words if blisters haven't materialized yet they probably never will. That word "probably" was enough to make me go ahead and do it on my 1979 H37C. But you know you have to get down to clean gelcoat before you can barrier-coat. And then it requires five or six coats with a time element in between. Not a fun task. And your keel is lead, not iron.

Did a bottom job this spring

Mine is a 91, it took four gallons of interlux barrier coat. You have to get to bare glass, and then rough it up. Do you have any leaks by the aft bulkhead? It is a problem on mine. Bill

At least 5 coats

Lot of work. Just give her a light sanding and some fresh paint. That what I did!

At Least 5 gallons

Then 3 gallons of bottom paint. Plus you need lots of paint stripper. I recommend Peel Away. You can use the cheaper stuff but you have to neutralize it! Get the cheap Peel Away at home depot! I would think you'll be near a grand when your done!

Oh, fresh water

the worst for blisters! Do you need to do it, NO! BUT epoxy barrier is the best protection from blisters! You have to weight it out. Do you plan to keep the boat for a long time? Your in fresh water but it is not warm, that is a plus!

No bulkhead leaks.

Bill, No leaks that I have noticed, but then again, which aft bulkhead? Main cabin or aft cabin? I have noticed a small leak around the aluminum hatchboard frame, and I'm planning on rebedding that while I've got her hauled out. None in the aft cabin, though. Robert
