I haven't figured it out yet, on my recently acquired 1980 37C, just how to determine the fuel level in my diesel tank. Anybody know?

There should be a level Gage if you lift up the cushion on the quarter berth right at the front on the left hand side. The tank is 40 gal.

Thank you, sir, I will check that the next time I'm at the boat.
The best way to tell how much fuel you have is; When no more fuel will go into the tank, it is full. I use that as my gauge, I never run out. Except that one time. (jk)

this pic is from my 1983 37C quarter berth.
If you have the original analogue gauge you should pull it out and see if there is any cork left 8^)

I emptied mine, cut an access and checked the inside. Perfectly clean. Refilled with 5 gallon jigs. On the gauge, 1/4 tank is 5 gallons, 1/2 tank is 12 1/2 , 3/4 tank is 25 gallons . Tank is double tapered, top is level, bottom not.

They may have changed the tanks during the run. The specs on the boat indicate that the tank is 44 gal. If you can figure out the number of cubic inches, there is 231 cubic inches per gallon.

You can easily replace that manual gauge with an electric one from WemaUSA. Not very expensive. I also keep a log of our fuel usage so I check the gauge and the log when we are ready to make any extended trips. Usually fill up 2 times per season and we use anywhere from 18-30 gal. per fill.

I find fuel gauges to be convenient but not necesarilly reliable. The markings on them more often than not do not reflect the actual levels. That is why some do their own marks and others learn to compensate when reading theirs. There is a method which allows you to very accurately calculate the amount of used fuel. I encompasses the use of an hour meter, the burn rate of your engine and the usable size of your fuel tank. There is plenty of information in the archives about how to do the calculations and refine the burn rate for your engine. It will serve you in range calculations and scheduling refueling stops. I glance at the fuel gauge to see if I have more than half or less than half a tank but relly on the calculations to tell me how much fuel I have.

I just installed an automotive fuel sender and gauge and put it inside the cabin with a toggle switch to turn it on for checking, the senders are adjustable to the depth of you tank
