Just curious... How many of you currently (or formerly) work on boats for a living?

How about working for my boat

I don't work on my boat for a living, but it seems I spend most of my time working on my boat -- and most of my money. Maybe I live for working on my boat? Mike Turner S/V Amity

I wish

I wish I could figure out a way to work on boats (sail) for a living and still pay all my bills.

mking a living working on boats

I guess at some time or another we have all had this thought. I know in my head I have schemed a thousand different scenerios. Everything from chartering to delivery to writing books. But I also often wonder if making an advocation a vocation would ruin my love of boats, the ocean and sailing

Work

Most people I know that work on boats for a living, meager at that, no longer own a boat. They want to get away from them. In a previuos life I turned a hobby into a business. Biggest mistake of my life.

Sail for a Living

Not me, but a few years back, I took lessons from a retired Coast Guard officer turned sailing instructor at local jr. college. I always thought HE had an enviable position (and a pension to boot).

Just an Observation On Life

Very few people who make a living at something, tend to hang out after work in a forum that talks about their work. That would be obsessive, and I've already been accused of being sailing obsessed 8^). I'd be a single sailor if that were to happen. Don

My boat is my office.

During the weekday, I take my laptop to the boat, and it becomes my office. I have two phone lines at the dock, one for voice, the other for internet.. See here:- http://www.purebytes.com/morningstar -Neal.

Enviable position

An associate of mine works in the headquarters of a boat manufacturer. She has access to the Company boat, docked at the marina, when not working... Not a bad deal, air conditioned work conditions during the 105 degree summer - and a boat, with maintenance and slip fees paid for (doesn't have to deal with launching at the ramp during the summer), to play on after-hours! The only drawback - IT's NOT A SAILBOAT! :)

Retired, living and working on my boat

Back in 94, when I came up from the Keys to St. Pete area, my goal was to make my 27 ft. 1982 Hunter a blue water capable boat, since then I completed over a hundred projects, being that I draw out before I cut out, or add to, while recoup from a hip replacement, I generated a book, with 70 seaworthy and desirable projects, over 150 items, it looked so good, my friends told me to publish it, so now I'm waiting for the Lib. of congress for copyrights. my projects, have made my coastal cruiser into a blue water capable boat, with 6 mini blkhd ribs, watertight hatches, lids, compartments, lazerettes, and companionway door, floatation, cutter rig, and a whole lot more, Yeh, I work work on sailboats, and for nine years lived on mine.

A Worthy Idea!

Heard about a guy who planned to live on his boat and cruise extensively but needed a source of income. He took a good diesel mechanics course and equipped his own boat with appropriate tools. I understand he gets regular work everywhere he goes even in remote areas cause marine diesels always need attention.
