I am having a block and tackel made up to clime the mast on my C-30 but plan to purchase a 456 Hunter CC in the future so i would like the line to be long enough to reach the top of the mast of the 456. I see on the web site it is 63'0" Mast Ht. (fr dwl) which looks like from the water line. How tall is it from the deck? thanks Chip

The I measurment..

per this site shows at 55'. WOrkin from w/l up, figure 4' w/l to rubrail and 2' to base of mast would be 63-4-2=57 which leaves about 2' to boom = 55'. I'd figure 58' to deck is probably safe. However, I bot an ATN climber at the boat show this winter and Etienne himself (that's the owner's first name, pronounced A-T-N) said 75' of line was what he recommended for my 58'6" dwl mast because I could haul one end to the top, put the other through a turning block and back to a cockpit winch to pull it taught. I've used it once and he was pretty close! Have you thought of how to tighten your line?

use safety line

Chip, I put together a block and tackle system for Akula my ’82 Hunter 33 using two fiddle blocks,4:1. The system works well. It could hoist myself up top but have always used help on deck to hoist and cleats off. Mulf asks a good question regarding securing the line once reaching top. With my system one halyard supports the top block and a second halyard secured near the mast base is used for a safety line with ascender. The attached picture provides a good view of the ascender. Someday my deckhand will climb above the spreaders. David

climbing mast with bloc and tackle.

Well I am having a rigger make it for me, he (when he came to my boat to check out the rigging) had a nice setup. It is a two sheave block at the top and I think a two sheave block at the bottom 4.1 which he said he sold a lot of and has never had a complaint. It is tied off by a cleat placed on the bottom block. I bought one set up at the Chula Vista CA boat swap meet but after using friends at the marina I can see it is not a safe setup. The one I used was OK but was hard to pull myself up with and the line was small for my hands. Rigworks is who is making one up for me. I was thinking of a six to one but it would take forever to get up the mast. I decided it is too important and I can not spend any more time on the project so I am buying one. I like the block and tackle type because it can also be used for other things. So to answer you question the line gets tied off at the block which is in front of you and has a cleat on it.

55'-06"

Base on deck to top of "furling" mast on a 450 is 55'-06". This should be the same for a 450.
