Greetings, I have a 1987 Hunter 23. There are two backrest cushions below and space for two more(?). How many cushions are OEM for this boat...two or four? If four, any thoughts on how to get two more? Sail on! Richard "Invictus"

If you mean...

...the ones with the metal clips in back that hang on the shelf, the answer is two. These cushions can also be used to make a queen-size berth. Just slide the floorboards into the vertical slots in front of the seats and lay the seatback cushions on top. Peter H23 "Raven"

Thank you!

Thank you for your prompt reply. Mostly though, thank you for your generous participation in this forum. I have tracked many archived threads and you and "Raven" consistantly appear. On behalf of H23 owners everywhere, I offer you heartfelt gratitude. To quote that eloquent beer commercial: "I love you man!" Richard "Invictus"

Queen size berth

Has anyone really tried to use the "queen size" berth? I tried it a few years back and the only way that I could see using it would be to sleep "crosswise", i.e., feet to port, head to starboard (or the other way). Of course, since the normal berth cushions get more wear (since people / gear) sits on them more, the two side cushions ended up being higher than the head/foot sides making for a very uncomfortable night.

Used it all the time

We used the queen sized berth all the time. It was very comfortable. In fact friends with larger boats were often jealous as they had much smaller accomodations. I always felt that this was a great asset to the boat.

We Use It

Richard, When my wife and I go out for a wekend with our kid, we put the kids in the fore-berths and we use the queen berth. I think it's more comfortable than some hotel beds I've been in. I can get a good night's sleep with that berth. /Chuck Windsongs 85 H23

Air Bed

We also like sleeping in the queen berth. We have a queen air bed that we place on top of the cushions. We put a quilt over the bed. Feels and sleeps just like our queen bed at home. I use a battery inflater/deflater. Also we are close to the screens so that we are able to get fresh air.

love the 'queen size' berth, but

my wife and I decided it was in the interests of the seat backs to put a length of plywood underneath the seatbacks to stiffen them. Otherwise it works fine. It also makes a great play area if you are sailing with youner chilren. The only cavat is that you make sure to fill in the space at the bulkhead so kids cannot fall into it. One of ours did when she was about 3 or 4 years old. We had to rush her to the hospital to get a depressed skull fracture fixed. The keel bolts stick up in that area. As for the child, she's 16 now, and acts like a normal teenager - incomprehensible. Jim Kolstoe, h23 Kara's Boo
