two plus two

First boat was a 16' catamaran, then a Kirby 25', then a Beneteau RC30E ( eleven years) and now a Beneteau 361. Canoes and Kayaks along the way. Enjoyed the first two keelboats for racing, but present 361 is favorite for cruising.

First boat

Well, I have just purchased my FIRST boat, a 1973 O'Day 22 that I named "Bay Tripper". It has been a lifelong dream come true. My second boat is a Walker 8 dingy just obtained last week. I don't know about future boats but I am enjoying my first sailboat this summer. My first sail was all I thought it would be...exciting. At the end, I was pumped and drained at the same time. Yea! O'Day. Larry Beavers, Fall River, MA

Ownership

I learned to sail on a borrowed 17 foot catamaran but it doesn't count, although it started the whole thing. After that, I owned a range of motor boats for fishing and water skiing. Then, I went back to sailing with a 17 ft catamaran which I took to NC; this was the most exciting boat I owned. Then I bought a used Herreshoff designed 25 ft cabin keel boat, which I found quite haecy and very tender. Last year, I put my hands on a 1982 Tanzer 10.5m pilot house keel boat and I changed the hard ginghy for an inflatable, which makes it my 7th boat. The Tanzer is definetly my favorite and will likely be my last boat, given that it can be concidered as a motor sailor.

owned boats

Including assorted dinghies, I've owned 15 boats in the 38 years that I've been sailing. My favorite is the Hunter Legend 43, that we still have. The reason for trading up has always been size. I expect to have the 43 for another 20 years. It's big enough to go any damn place that I want...and small enough to daysail. It even singlehands well.

Two boats

I've had my second boat for just over a year now. It's a 98 Hunter 240. My wife and I are loving the added luxury of a cabin below. We are getting ready for a 5 day port hopping trip along the Eastern shore of Lake Michigan. This boat is perfect for our current needs of trailer sailing from Indianapolis and home porting at our local reservoir. My first sailboat was a 1975 Tanzer 16 that I had for three seasons. I learned to sail the hard way on that boat. There were many days I was in way over my head and now I realize what I should have done as opposed to what I did. I have the dream of someday moving to a warmer climate and retiring with a bigger boat. We're living cheap and putting as much into the 401k's as possible to plan for this dream....now if the stock market would cooperate.

Eighteen (including dingys and Windsurfers)

Started sailing 22 years ago and had four Hobie Cats. Then moved up to a Catalina 22 Had two sailboards, six dingys, several Sea Ray power boats, an Aristocraft 19, and a Seadoo Explorer (inflatable jet boat) and of coarse my Hunter 34. I guess I like the Hunter the best but I'm due for an upgrade if the stock market ever recovers. Barry

My first boat was a Sunfish. Then I had a MiniFish with a Sunfish rig. Since then I have had over a Doz sailboats. We wont mention the power boats. Currently I have a Teal 16, a Hobie 16, a Spindrift 22 and a Cal 25 and hope to end up with at least a 35 footer CaptEdTeach

Just getting started

I spent a lot of time crewing on Highlanders, Thistles and various cruisers before I bought a boat. The first two were Sunfish, which is as simple as the sport gets. Then I stepped up to a Cal 27 Mk III. I was a great boat for the Ohio River at Louisville. I moved to Columbus and I can't leave a boat in a slip year round. So, I traded the Cal for a Hunter 25.5. It was a boat I was very familiar with in KY and it has a trailer so I am looking forward to getting it up north. My favorite? So far, the Cal in 10-20 kts true....it flies.

First one 52 years ago

I got my first boat 52 years ago when I was 4 years old. A rowboat tied to a dock which I would row out 20 ft and then back on Seneca Lake. Since then I have owned 12 boats inlcuding 2 rowboats, a 15ft Lyman, two hydroplanes, a Lightnig, a Windmill, Optimist pram, Cat 22 and a Cat 25 and currently a Hunter 28.5. I think my next boat is always my favorite.

Sail boat 3 ,Powerboat 1

My first boat , a no name brand 16footer on a trailer sailed 2 seasons and rented bigger boats , traded it last Dec. for my Catalina 22 fin keel and have been sailing san Diego Bay area last 6 months a couple of times a week. I love the Catalina put still wanted to trailer to other places. Was real close to buying a trailer for the Catalina but have been researching other boats , weight, my tow van, my wallet, used boat mkt, etc. to try and come up with answer. The bottem line I bought a nice 84 Macgregor 25 on a duel wheel trailer last week. So now I have 2 sailboats. We will keep the Mac here at home and trailer sail, and keep the Catalina in San Diego. We also have a 1988 Sea Swirl inboard run about a real nce boat . It has been a no problem boat so I recomaen Seaswirl to any one looking at power boats. I will say the Mac Eectrical system looks a bit cheeze next to the Catalina, but I had planed on upgrading any way so that should not be a problem I pretty excited to start sailing the Mac I hear thay very good sailers. Getting a lot of good info from the Mac Email list. Jack s/v ToTacJac Cat. 22 San Diego Ca

Boats over the years

>How many boats have you owned? Five boats (including one 16 foot Boston Whaler with a 70 HP O/B). >What was your first boat? My first boat was a 16 foot day sailer, Super Satillite (made by Catalina). It had an aluminum dagger board and rudder. Could easily get up on a plane in the right sea condition. Name her the "Banshee" (Gaelic for White Lady- a ghost) even thou it had a blue hull. >Do you still own it? No sold it to a fellow who was afraid of it. Too tender. Sailed it only on the artifical lakes in West Lake Village. >What has led you to buy new ones? The family and the low maintenance of the SunFish. Had two, one green and white the other orange and yellow. >Will this boat be your last one? The Mac26X will be my last boat. It currently serves my retirement life style for overnight sailing and low cost for maintenance and storage on a trailer. >Which was (or is) your favorite? I would have to say the Mac26X. I never believed I would both be able to afford such a large boat and the opportunities for exploring Lake Mead's coves and beaches.

Lots of fun

Have had many boats. Most small racing boats. My first was at 12 and was a Snipe that weighed a ton back in 51. Raced in handicap and cut m teeth on this one. Next was a Jet 14. Raced and sailed this boat after the Service untill 1982. This is my favorite. Also raced a comet for 3 years. Another good boat. Graduated to day sailing with an ODay marinar. Needed more excitement and went to an ODay daysailer. Just bought an ODat 25 hopeing to see if this will satisfy family. My first love is the planing hull of a small boat.

Three and a half and counting.

I have to date owned three sailboats, or actually two and a half sailboats and one powerboat. My first was a 1987 Spindrift 24, which I am told only half a dozen of the brand were ever produced in that size. I owned it in partnership with a friend, who later moved and wanted to take it with him. My second boat a year later was a 1970 Venture 24, bought as a fixer-upper, which I did over the course of two or three years and then sold at a substantial profit. I currently own a 1976 Morgan 25, also a fixer upper, which I only bought two months ago. The day after the Morgan was delivered, and knowing that she'd be facing several weeks of bottom and paint work before being ready for the water, I found and purchased a 75 Aristo-Craft 19ft Powerboat with a 165hp ib/ob. This is my first experience with powerboat ownership and let me tell you it's a different world. In exceptional cosmetic shape and advertised as needing only minor mechanical repairs, I got her at a real "deal". Well, the so-called "minor" repairs turned out to be almost a third again more than the purchase price, and though she's now in the water and running OK, there's still more work to be done. (Maybe someone's trying to tell me to stick with sailboats, huh?) Powerboat ideas aside, my current plans are to fix up the Morgan, sail her for a couple of years, then trade up to something in the 30' to 40' range suitable for coastal and caribbean cruises of 6 months or more.

Fifth Sailboat!

I'm on my fifth sailboat since retiring from the Navy 28 years ago. Prior to that my boats were submersible. Having a boat at one's own dock is the only way to go. When my grandkids invade the house, I move aboard!

First boat but not the last

Salacia's my first boat but certainly not the last. I *looooooove* her and know she'll always have a special place in my heart. LaDonna

Fifty two!

I am told that Hal Jones of Ft. Lauderdale, FL has owned 52 boats personally for his own use (not counting the ones owned by his company). He currently has an Eastbay 40. That is roughly an average of one per year for as long as he has owned boats. He may well hold the record! I'm a novice compared to him. I have owned a mere 21 boats since 1961. This includes the six I own now.

First boat was a Lightning in 1965. Sold it in 1967. No sailing for 36 years. Bought a ComPac 16 in 2001, nice boat lots of fun but desired something a bit larger. Bought a 1994 Hunter 23.5 in 2001 and sold the ComPac. This is where I want to be. The 23.5 is great for central Florida lake sailing and easy to trailer. Works good for 2 on weekends and am looking forward to sailing in the Keys.
