Our 1981 Hunter 30 is powered by a Yanmar diesel engine that runs louder than other boats in our marina. Is this normal or are there ways to make it run quieter? I have already replaced the soundproofing in the engine compartment.
I have a 1981 Hunter 30 and its way too loud also. Did the new soundproofing help at all? If you look over the engine, you'll notice that under the step and on the bottom inside of the cockpit there is no soundproofing. I am building a soundproofed removable shelf over the engine. I'm also thinking about upgraded motor mounts and one of those plastic links to the prop shaft.
I have a '78 hunter 30. I don't know what they put in the later models, but I have a 1 cylinder. I think the only way to make my engine quieter is to replace it with a 3 cylinder!! Ha! Actually with a 22 year old engine, often times I am just happy that it makes noise at all!!
"Louder than other boats in our marina" somehow implies that the noise out the transom is in question. this nois could be related to the muffling system used. A good water-lock muffler should make you even with the others. Changing the sound insulation refers to the noise within the boat. One of the biggest sources for diesel engine noise is the air inlet, especially on single cylinder engines. Your Y series engine has a "tin can" for a silencer on the intake. This noise can sometimes be attenuated by adding a length of tubing to the inlet of the can. Don't go smaller in diameter than the inlet and don't go too long, unless you increase the ID of the tube. Adding a couple of cylinders is a sure way to reduce the noise.
My 1980 H30 with a 2qm15 is loud also, I am talking about engine noise not out the pipe, that is just fine, I think it is a combination of vibration, and normal engine noise.. FWIW. Fred
