How is your genoa tack attached?

On my 90 H35.5 the Hood 800 SL roller furler drum has a 1' wire loop attached to the bit where the "tack shackle" should be attached. The implication is that the sail's tack (or a shackle) should be looped over this wire thereby raising the foot of the sail by about 6". If I do that however, the sail cannot be properly hoisted as the head hits the top of the forestay. If I attach the tack directly to the tack shackle, things seem to work fine but I'm wondering why the loop is there. From the wear marks etc it appears that the previous owner used the wire loop but I can't see having used it for that sail. So, what do other people have on their boats? BTW, the sail is a 150% genoa (original UK sail). It has a built in 6" webbing loop at the tack. Jeff
