Last fall, after sitting out sailing for twenty some years, the sailboat bug bit me again.
My local marina had a Mac 25 for sale. Two grand, everything included, with a trailer also.
Sailed most everyday till the weather forced me off the lake (Nebraska)
knowing what I had, was not exactly what I wanted, I went looking for something a little bigger. Macs go to 26 for a trailer sailor with some newer features, including a larger engine.
My local dealer (5 hours away round trip) had an X on his lot I looked at on-line.
We talked, and struck a deal. I drove the five hours to give him 60% of the money, and was going to pay the balanced when the boat was ready.
It was a Saturday, and he closed to watch a football game. Note on the door said he was delivering a boat. Boat my ass! This is Nebraska, I knew better.
Monday I called him, and he admitted he was watching football with friends.
I emailed him the following Saturday at 7:30 telling him I wanted to come over again (another five hours) to see the boat, and pay him money.
Did not return my eMail all day.
Pissed, I started to wonder if this X MacGregor was really my best option.
Lets just say, The Mac dealer in Nebraska is a nice guy, but his business practices during football games sucks.
I looked around, and did two things. One, I purchased a 19' power boat with a 150 PH engine for $2200. Sweet boat, and lots more power than any X MacGregor ever thought of. This will be perfect for taking behind my toter home on vacations.
Second, I found a perfect sailboat for me. A 30' Clipper Marine. Great shape, well cared for. I was able to get a slip with electric and water hook ups. The cabin is much larger than the smaller MacGregors, and it is a true sailboat, not a blend between a power boat and a sailboat.
For you X & M fans, that I am sure love your boats, I almost joined you, except for a couple football Saturdays. lol
Here is our slip for next year. Pretty cool, yes!
Here is my CM 30, waiting for next boating season
Here is my better half, in the boat we call hers. Easy to launch, no rigging, just start the engine with a key like a car, and she is off driving across the lake at 50 MPH.
I ended up spending 8 grand less than the X was going to cost me, and ended up with a boat for each of us.
