I have an older Yanmar without a tach and without a thermostat. I have been told I can run it a 90% but that seems too many RPMs. How do you all out there determine what is the right speed?
My diesel performs best in the 75-80% range. You can feel its groove - output is great and doesn't vary much and vibrations are low. It's a 40hp Yanmar (1999) that loves to hum at 2500-2700 RPM. Above that it gets very noisy with no noticable difference in output, just diesel consumption.
