What is the fastest you have gone under sail? GPS indicated 6.5 kts yesterday on a 26X with full main and working jib.

I've only had it a few months, but our speed record so far is 6.9mph (GPS) with standard jib and full main. Our previous record was 6.2mph with just the standard jib, no main in heavy wind.

top end common speed

6.5 under jib and 25 mph downwind gust. Would like to know what Mac sailors do on a regular basis. I can hit 5.5 mph for a couple of minutes at best on a tight to broad reach with fully battened main and Mac genoa.

I've seen 6 kts for extended periods

I've seen 6 kts for extended periods on a beam reach. The speed will fluctuate between 5.7 and 6.3 but I get a good average of 6 kts. I've seen 7.2 for short periods.

46.52 knots!

Yellow Pages Endeavour, IYRA Official Class-B record holder. (related link below) No, it's not a 26X. It doesn't even have a motor. I was just wondering how big an OB it would it take to get an X up to this speed. More speed sailing here: http://www.speedsailing.com/ Odd looking craft. Not very good for a weekend cruise with the family. Happy sails *_/), MArk

That Ain't Fast!!

For some strange reason my speed gauge/fishfinder doesn't function entirely well. Under motor it records 5.5 to 6.5 mph. About right I would say. But when sailing it reveals the true prowess of Madrigal and her noble Captain. We achieve 45, 55 and even 65mph. We are shiftin'. Hey that is what the scale says and I am inclined to believe it!! Back to the motor and we are back in the land of reality, 5.5mph. The unit is a Rayathon. Any ideas? I wonder if it is a current shortage problem when the alternator ain't working? Who knows? Lake St Clair is kinda green and old Maddie does have a fair dose of algae on her hind quarters, perhaps this is a factor. At present however I will hold the record. 60mph under sail in a 15-20 knt blow. Who knew? Regards Phil
