How far do you drive to your boat?

How far is your boat from your home? your job?, or where ever you head to the boat from? Some of you are lucky and live within spitting distance of your boat, maybe you can see it moored out in front of your house? Others, because to job, family, or whatever, have to drive to the boat slipped in a marina or trailer their boat to their cruising waters. So how far is too far away to slip or moor a boat and still get value out of it? 1 hour, 2, or 3 hour drive?

About 90 miles

It takes us about 1 hour and 40 minutes door to dock. There are a couple of marinas somewhat closer, but no dock space available in Chicago which would cut it down to about an hour. Also, my father-in-law, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law also have boats at the same marina (though they are stink-potters!) so it is often like a family reunion (and yes, I get along fine with all of them).

90 minutes.

And exactly 90 miles. Luckily all 70 mph highway. On Lake Erie there are closer marinas but too far from the islands. There are marinas closer to the islands but too far from the house. A compromise.

Pretty close now

I'm about 45 minutes door to door now(docked on lake) which has been great for getting in sailing time, working on projects, etc., even with family and work responsibilities. However, I'm considering moving to the coast which would be at least 4 hours, and, I'm having a difficult time now with the idea of being so far away. I know my usage would go way down and the costs would be much higher as well(higher marina fees, less oportunity to do work myself, etc). I think a couple of hours is the most I could accept.

~10 minutes

When the wife and I lived on the east coast, getting to the marina was always an ordeal...fighting traffic, construction, even distance. Now, it's a short 10 minutes or so, and considering we usually don't drive during the week (we both live and work in the immediate area, so we can either bike or walk), driving is almost a nice change. matt

98 miles......

From Memphis, TN to the Tennessee River (Dam and Lake area). It takes about one hour and fourty-five minutes. Three marinas there and all are full.

About 300 Yard Drive and a 100 Yard walk

We are lucky enough to be retired and live at a marina/golf community. Ten years ago we were working in Missouri and 70 miles from the boat. Best drive in the world toward the boat and a long way home on Sunday night. Bill

Depends.

It's 67 miles (and 70 minutes on a good day) around the beltway or 63 miles (65 minutes) via I-66 to 110 to 395N to Penn Ave. to Anacostia Highway to Rte. 50. ;^) ~ Happy sails to you ~ _/) ~

45 miles to the dock

I live on the west side of Houston. It is about 45 miles (and 45 minutes)from the house to the boat. The boat is on Clear Lake, which opens to Galveston Bay, then to the Gulf of Mexico and the world.

We are at a flat 3 hours

which can seem very long on Sundays. The drive up can seem long too, after a rather hectic week. We, rarely, miss doing it every weekend from April to November. Then, we try to get up about two weekends per month when the boat is on the hard.

It is not a bad ride

I am about 35 minutes from my boat if there is no traffic, a little longer if i have to take the back roads. I guess that is far enough to make it a special ride but close enough I can get down for an evening sail or just to check it out
