Just setting up my "new" 1984 22 for the first time and am not certain how to secure the sail to the boom end. The only fitting I have is the small connector that you the hook from the back stay attaches. I was expecting a small cleat or something. I thought something might be missing but ther are no holes in the boom where a cleat or pulley might have been. Everthing looks intact just no good way to attach the small piece of rope at the end of the sail. Any suggestions ?

The old owner might have put a pulley on that fitting for the backstay, but its just a guess. anyway you can call the old owner and ask what he did...??

I'd like to know about this too...

The Catalina Manual doen't show any detail about this subject. I'd like to rig something which could handle the outhaul as well as a topping lift. A picture could save a thousand words.....

Hello, You can see the owners manual for an 87 here http://www.catalina22.org/manuals/mnl87/handbook.htm It has some good pictures. Regarding your particular boat, who knows? It's common for the owners to modify them all a little. On my boat, there was a block at the end of the boom, the outhaul ran around the block and along the boom to a cleat. Simple to do. BTW, it can't be on the backstay because the boom swings and the backstay doesn't.

Get an outhaul rig from CD

They have two types: the internal boom 8:1 or the economy 4:1. The first is around $100 and the second half that. Since I'm a poor man, I got the 4:1 and it works great. A performance must. Let me know if you need more detail.
