how does my boom stay up ?

I recently bought a c22 and have been rigging the boat up to the best of my no how when i tryed attaching the boom to the mast there was nothing to stop the boom from dropping is there suposed to be? i found a rectangle peace of stainless steel attached to a rope that goes up to the top of the mast starboard side? any sugestions thanks.

Two ways

(mainsail makes three) 1. Topping lift, from top of mast, a small, strong line or wire that attacehs to the boom, usually with some sort of tackle and a cleat for adjusting height. 2. "Pigtail" attached to backstay, a short piece of wire or line with a snap or shackle that attaches to the boom end to hold it up.

Pig Tail

Hang the aft end of the boom off of your "pig tail" which should be a piece of line or wire with a clip on it. This clips onto the end of the boom and supports it when the sail is down only. As soon as you raise the sail, take it off the pig tail, but watch out for the main sheet. Your boom may fly outboard pretty fast. The other way is a "topping lift" which requires a bit of rigging and more line. The Pig Tail works fine for me. Campy out!

Topping lift

COULD THE TOPPING LIFT BE THE LINE THAT GOES UP THE STARBOARD SIDE OF THE MAST AND DOWN WITH A CLEAT AT THE BOTTOM OF THE MAST THE LINE HAS A 2" LONG BY 1/4 IN WIDE STAINLEES STEAL PLATE THAT LOOKS LIKE IT COULD SLIDE INTO THE MAST SIDEWAYS?
