I see many people like to have carpet inside and outside their sailboats. How is this secured? I want to be able to remove it for cleaning.

this is sorta of one of those i want it all questions....some times we have to do things to have what we want with a compromise involved....for perminate you just glue it down with 3M 90 spray adhesive if you want to be able to remove it ....you could have Velcro strips sewn to the back and then fasten to other half of the Velcro to the surface.......or you could get some rubber backed carpet and use that it holds fairly good when lay ed down on a good surface like the cabin sole.....my remark is not to offend any one but to put it in prospective....hope this helps...

Thanks, I was thinking of a permanent installation but I was wondering if I was making a mistake. I remember seeing removable carpet in a fishing boat once, it was held by hooks and grommets.

The carpet in my cabin is just cut to fit with the edges finished. No glue, snaps or velcro required. The irregular shape of the sole and an exact fit are enough to hold it in place. There is also an additional cut that allows a portion to be rolled up for access to the bilge sump without rolling up the whole carpet.

the heavy entryway runner that can be found at home depot or lowes is good for this.
it has a reasonably heavy nonskid rubber backing, and it can easily be cut to fit....
and it will lay down without curling at the corners....

any permanent glued down install of carpet will be a terrible mistake....on our little boats:)

I like the idea of a finished edge carpet, how much will I likely pay for this? I like the idea of a runner carpet for the outside. My wife has gotten involved so I guess my decorating ideas will need to pass her approval now, I had bought blue boat carpet for the trailer bunks and have some left but she wants green for the interior.

with the indoor/outdoor runner, it will leave a nice unfrayed edge when you cut it to size, although you can sew an edge on it, but its an unnecessary step that adds nothing to the cosmetics of it.... in my opinion
the PO of my boat had automotive carpet in it with a finished edge... the carpet was very light weight with no nonskid backing and had velco holding it in place, so it would shift under foot and still come loose at the velcro sometimes...

this new stuff is so much better in looks and function as it stays put.

I use a non skid backing on my boat. We bought a silk carpet in Egypt and use a cheap non skid found in walmart. It has worked well and we don't slip. We can bring the carpet up on deck to dry when we forget about the overhead hatch. I would never glue down the carpet because of the wet weather on most boats.

I use the rubber mesh that you get for shelf liners. Very cheap, comes in rolls, and stops carpet slipping around
