Assuming that we're talking about a submersible electric pump with a built-in strainer, the first step would be to put the boat in water in full sailing trim, in other words with the engine on the transom and with full tanks, et cetera, and then dump a gallon of water into the bilge. Wherever the water collects the deepest, that's where you want the pump to go.

I agree with John also make sure it is wired directly into the battery, not thru. any sort of buss board. And also if always in the water ( the boat) go for a min of 500gph.

Bilge Pump Installation

I have a 1982 22' hunter and I just bought a rule 360 bilge pump and a separate float switch to install in the compartment under the sink. This is the only viable place to install a bilge pump in a 22 foot hunter. It is the lowest point and good access to the battery. I could not find an automatic bilge that would fit in the space nor would I recommend an automatic pump. There is another posting in this section where someone installed an automatic pump and had it come up through the hole in the hatch cover. I also think that you should not hard wire your bilge pump in place without some form of fuse or breaker to keep from burning up your pump and possibly ruining your battery. You also want t make sure that the boat put of the bilge is above the water line on your boat I am routing my pump out the stern of the boat with the aft sea chest. It is hard to get to but it is one less through hole to leak. I can send pictures if you are interested.
