How do you get to the chain plates?

Our Hunter 310 is leaking around the chain plates on both the port and starboard sides. Does anyone have any idea of how to get to the nuts on the chain plate bolts? On the port side, the medicine cabinet is in the way on the port side and the cabinets are in the way on the starboard side. If anyone has had this problem before, let me know how you got around it.

My deepest condolance .....................

............. as I went through the same miserable thing the year after we got our '99 H310. The best way to do it is to ensure the rub rail is warm (use a hair dryer) and then use a hard wooden wedge to pry the erail out until the bottom of the plate is exposed. Slack off the shroud and go eihter into the forward cabinet (for starboard plate) or into the medicine cabinet (for port) one at a time, of course. Be sure to wear rubber gloves when you are in there or you will near die from fibreglass punctures. Remove the nuts and backing plate and remove the chain plate. You will notice almost no sealant behind the plate and this is the cause of the leak in the first place. Clean both surfaces scrupulously. Use 5200 to reseal the joint AND USE AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN to ensure you have a good seal. Use masking tape to keep the 5200 under control. Rewarm the rail and it will shrink back into place. This was the most miserable job I have done on the boat because of the tight location of the nuts but if you take it slowly .......... no problem. Reagrds, s/v Island Hunter

Did you try to take off the cabinets?

Ralph, Did you try at all to remove the medicine cabinet from the port side or the storage cabinet on starboard side?
