The Keel/Hull seam is separating on our 1986 O'Day 272 (wing keel). It's not sitting perfectly straight on the trailer so one side is about 1/4" at the most and the other side is slight. Is some flexing normal? No water comes into the bilge from around the keel bolts, there doesn't seem to be any damage to the fiberglass and it wasn't the result of an underwater collision. We think it began about 4 years ago when the boat went aground during a storm and drug the mooring anchor to the the muddy shores of our inland lake. The Problem didn't show up until 2 years later. I tried sealing it with polyurethane sealer but that didn't work. I have a lot of questions that may be hard to answer without seeing the keel but here goes. Can you tighten the nuts on the keel bolts without breaking the seal around the bolts? Should that be done or checked regularly? What is the approximate torque? Do I have to drop the keel to fix it or can I just tighten the nuts and reseal the seam? What material would I use to fair the keel along the seam? What appears to be there now is a hard type of fairing compound. One person I talked to that does a lot of fiberglass repair work said that he would just drop the keel a few inches and clean out the old material and recaulk it. If I have to drop the keel, what type of caulk would be used around the keel bolts? Are there any books or magazine articles on repairing this problem? Thanks.
