We are looking for a way to carry bicycles on our Hunter 26 sailboat. If you have done it, please tell me how. Thanks - paul

2 full size Dahon folding bikes

We stored them in the bow berth on a piece of vinyl this summer. We will get the carrting cases, and stow them in the quarter berth of our '77 h27 next year. (We probably have less room below than your more modern 260.) This bike has 18 speebs, supports serious side trips, and is easy to get on and off the boat. David Lady Lillie

folding bicycles

I carry two folding Dahon bicycles on a H33. The challenge has been how to do it without taking up a berth. My bikes are 16" wheel old style 3 speed Dahons. The small wheel size makes the storage package smaller and doesn't make any great difference in riding at least on a paved road. They do make you look somewhat like a bear in a circus. Children all love these things and will gather from far and wide when you ride by. The small wheels are also very welcome in ferrying in a dinghy. the carrying case is a big deal on a boat to prevent scratching either the boat, you, or the bicycle. Ebay carries the Dahons from time to time. Good luck, a bike at the end of a trip is a real pleasure.

Quarter berth

I used to carry a small wheel, three speed Dahon, like Terry's, either in the quarter berth (garage!) or the cockpit locker. Great Bike. And it did draw a crowd! Sailing in Mexico, I used to whiz by many other cruisers who were hoofing it to Port Captain and Immigration offices to do their check in's. They would take a half a day to do their paperwork, but I could blaze around in less than an hour.It was not bad on dusty roads, and could handle potholes with a bone jarring bump. Unfortunately, after thirteen years of faithful, rustless, service, my Dahon was stolen! I am now wondering what to replace it with, and am leaning to the Dahon or Montague mountain bikes. Anyone have one of these?

dink

The folding bikes are on our wish list (getting to be a long list) so for now we just use some old heaps that we dump in our hard dink and strap them in. Rust, who cares, if they fall overboard we will have lost more in the lines tying them in than the bikes themselves. While in Cuba we were going to leave them there but the officials said we had to take them back, that should have been a hint as to their condition.

Bike Rack on the Stern Rails

Our C30's previous owner made a bike rack with 2 triangular aluminum supports. He covered them with carpet and drilled 2 holes in the stern rail on both sides adjacent to the swim ladder. The supports bolt on and you can support a couple of bikes off of the back. We haven't used them yet, but he used to use them all the time. Next time I'm on the boat I'll take a picture. If you want to see it send me an email: bwehmer@columbus.rr.com

Try folding

We have two folding bikes. We wrap them up in plastic and lash them to the stern rail with shock cord. Works fine.
