How do you burp that thing?

The guy at the boat show just compressed the bellows from the end that would be closest to the engine. I tried that the other day and it would not move. I did notice that there is square set bolt through that collar...do I have to loosen that? Will be hauling the boat next week and would like to know how to do this before relaunching. Thanks

Grab the whole collar

closest to the engine and slide it aft. The bellows will compress and you'll get a shot of water coming out. You don't need to loosed anything. When I did it the first time, I was afraid to slide it back too hard, so like you, I couldn't figure out why it wasn't moving. But keep putting pressure, and it will slide. Roc

burping the seal

The bellows is attached to the shaft log. This is the side of the seal that is furthest from the engine. Simply push or pull aft on the bellows. You will cause the sealing surfaces to open up and some water will gush through. This allows water back into the shaft log and therefore into the seal faces to allow lubrication of the seal

Burp it.

Dear Mr. Johnson: To burp the PSS, you need to only separate the bellow and carbon from the stainless rotor. To do this you simply slide the carbon and bellow aft. This will compress the bellow allowing the separation, which allows the air to escape. Allow the separation for as long as it takes for the water to appear. If you should have any other questions please feel free to let us know. Sincerely, Kevin L. Woody
