Blow dryer

That's what the installer used to remove the old lettering from the boats on either side of us last week

The blessings of Neptune

You can only safetly remove the name from the boat with the blessings of Neptune [there is a ceremony (involving spirits)].

Heat gun

Heat is definitely the answer, but not sure if a blow dryer will be hot enough. Professional sign person I worked with used a "heat gun", a small one available at craft stores & the like. I tried it myself on my H26, and the decals came off amazingly easy.

Just be careful with heat guns...

Most blow dryers generate an amazing amount of heat - I've used it on the past to remove very old registration numbers, decals, etc. A heat gun can potentially generate enough heat to blister the gel coat if you aren't careful. As always, start slowly, with the gun/dryer further away and keep it moving (never let it sit for too long on one spot or be too close - that's when problems happen) Dave Crowley s/v Wind Dreamer

Just removed my stripes

My 1994 23.5 had the original stripes and I just removed them last week. I parked the boat at my buddies shop and it was in 70's and after sitting all day the stripes and lettering just peeled right off. Took about a half an hour per side, the side are all clean right now. I am restriping with with two Pacific Blue stripes on each side that come to a point at the bow and putting a 3" stripe at the water line. The new stripes will be painted on. Dave 'Simply Magic'

I used

a razor blade label remover. I let the stripes warm up in the sun and carefully ran the lable remover along as I pulled the stripes off. The remover did not gouge my gelcoat even one time and I didn't have to worry about burning it with a heat gun

Rubber eraser wheel

The best way to go is get a eraser wheel from an autobody supply store. put it in a drill and it wil do a good job

Twenty year old tape

I wondered recently how I would remove old striping and lettering. I initially tested it with a putty knife and it seemed permanently bonded to the fiberglass. I then tryed a painters glass razor. This worked great, just be careful not to dig into the fiberglass. I used a solvent by the name of "Oops" to take the old tape glue off. Came out very good.

Get the wheel

Forget chemicals and blow dryers. Get the wheel and save you and your boat a lot of time and irritation.

3M Has a fix

Try a # 07517 LASR or Large Area Stripe Removal disc assy. It is a flexible non abrsive product designed to be mounted on a right angle buffer that basically just continuoyusly beats back th eleading edge of the stripe. Try local West Marine store. If no stock, tell them to look in thier Port Supply catalog.

3M product versus Eraser

Looked up the 3M product. Link below. Looks like the same premise as the eraser wheel but appears to cost $55. I paid $7 for an eraser wheel. Not sure if the 3M product is any better. Tom
