Not a Bad Job

I removed all teak on my 25 last summer to rebed and refinish. It's not a bad job. To remove the toerails, just drill out the teak plugs with a good sharp bit as straight as possible. Take care not to [seriously] damage the screws underneath. The screws are stainless wood screws, probably with a philips head. DO NOT use a power screw driver. Some of them will likely require you to exert a bit of downward force and turn slowly, something difficult to do with a power screwdriver. You will want to replace all screws with new since it is near impossible not to damage the head with the drill bit to some extent. The companaionway board rails and the hatch rails are fastened the same way. The grab rails along the doghouse on my boat were bolted on rather than screwed. Everything was accessible and was the easiest to remove. I rebedded with 3M 4200. This stuff is great but sticky. I learned the hard way not to use to much, but still enough so that it just began to oose along all edges. This stuff begins to cure quickly, so if you get it where you don't want it, be ready to remove it quickly. The teak plugs can be bought anyplace and are best installed by coating with varnish to use as a glue. Use a sharp chisel to shave the plug level with the rail. Don't try to do it in one step or you'll likely end up with a divet. Good Luck Russ Marcks
