I have a 1984 Hunter 27. How do I know if it is a regular or tall rig?

Run a tape measure up the hoist, the standard rig should be close to 29.00ft, the tall rig is 32.30ft, these are the published dimensions, but not written in stone because things get replaced over the years.

Dave I don't know from what year model are you getting those measurements. The spec sheet for an 83 h27 indicates the mast height at 36'3" and mast height from the waterline at 40'11". All the 27 Cherubinis manufactured in the latter years of production were all labeled "Tall Rigs" because of the high aspect ratio of the sails but there was no alternative of a "Standard Rig". Bigjer is asking about an 84. As far as the SL designation, there are various interpretations, "Sport Light" "Sailer" and a few others which don't come to mind. Back in the mid seventies boat manufacturers used the components that they had at hand so it is likely some of the earlier models can be found with different lengths masts; not to mention refits. Back then the designation "Tall Rigs" sold boats so for the manufacturer it was highly desirable to use that designation. Hunter indeed built the latter h27s to comparative tall rig specs and rightly named the boat so even though they saw no need to produce a standard rig.

I am asking for a mainsail replacement, so it sounds like you are saying I would oreder one for the tall rig? Did I understand your response correctly?

You may have understood my response correctly but I apparently adressed the wrong question. How could I have missed you were looking for sail measurements?

Well just in general wondering if it's a tall rig.

Dear SlowHand:

By the info below your avatar, seems that you just registered with SBO. Presume you purchased your Cherubini Hunter only 27 recently?

Anyway, ever since I bought my Cherubini Hunter 36 five years ago, I've always taken particular interest in threads about the 27 (and also the 37) because at my yacht broker's yard, a Cherubini Hunter 27 was on the hard. I considered it, and was tempted, but a bigger boat was my desire. My admiration for the design continues. Here is a copy of a post I made a way's back to another "new" owner of your model.

=============================

Hi SamNelson

Hope that you will participate in this forum a lot as you go to task on your "fixer upper". She's worth it.

Here is a "cut-and-paste" of a post I made several years ago in response to a query by another new owner of a Hunter Cherubini 27 classic:

=================================

" ... the Cherubini Hunter classic design and sound construction were/are great. All-in-all a perfect boat for restoring to original glory.

On central San Francisco Bay quite a few times over the last several years I've seen a wonderfully restored Hunter Cherubini 27 ... with new sails ... out for a day cruise. When I notice it, I will alter my course to get a better look. (Unfortunately the owner may not know much about the Cherubini mystique since there has been no sign of recognition that my 1980 Cherubini Hunter 36 is part of the same line.)

I don't think there is any other 27' sailboat that under sail looks so much like a real mid/large cruiser. On the water, it gives the impression of a much bigger boat. Just wonderful. The brochure in the link that Ed sent shows the beautiful lines of the Cherubini H27."

====================================

Presumably you have found a copy of the owner's manual and the original brochure?

Good choice!

You mentioned Volvo? That would not be original, just like the sails.
