Hello I've read this site alot but first time posting. I have a 28-5 that I purchased and had planed to refinish the bottom, but the previous owner started to sandblast it and I can't see the old waterline. The boot stripe is there but I can't tell where the waterline is. When I redo the epoxy I want to bring it up to the waterline and put he boot stripe slightly higher. The bottom will be black and the stripe blue. Am I right in thinking this is the proper approach? Jeff

On the 28.5, the original bottom paint was one inch below the bottom of the blue boot stripe (cast into the gel coat); however the 28.5's really never floated on that line, and it's likely you want bottom paint right up to the bottom of the blue boot stripe , if not 1/2" higher. My 28.5 has always heeled a few degrees to starboard, so over the years I've adjusted the water line up the starboard side just a little more than on the port side.
I'd star with three or four coats of Interlux 2000 as a barrier coat , particularly if the gel coat has been sandblasted, then install the bottom paint of your choice.

The actual waterline of a boat is a moving target and varies accordying to the weight being added or removed from the boat. The best you could hope for is to set it when the boat is at the most common configuration. (filled water tank, fuel, number of persons aboard and amount of supplies) A common ruse among smugglers is to paint a real high waterline so that when the vessel is heavily laden it will look normal to law enforcement officers looking for signs. I would paint the hull up to the boot stripe. It will protect the hull against variations in weight configurations and constant splashing experienced in some docking conditions.

To really determine the actual water line for the particular boat, it must be in the water and with either a pencil or underwater marker of some kind is to mark the actual water line and then haul out and draw that line between the marks.

If in salt water, I use to paint two inches above because of extra gear that the owners would put on and the waves over a period of time in some areas, barnacles would grow on the sides where the waves were constant unless you painted above the water line.

I realize the water line will vary depending on the payload. I should have also said that the boat is in freshwater. The previous owner had started to sandblast the bottom but he stopped , thankfully,as he was unsure as to how to do it. I had the bottom planed to the fibreglass but there is approx. 1 1/2" of bootstripe left. I had read earlier that the boat actually sat a little heavier in the water than indicated by the bootstripe and you seem to indicate the same. So if I brought the interprotect up about an 1" onto the bootstripe and adjusted the bootstripe up accordingly I should be good? Thank you for the input it will help a great deal
