well, without the engine for starters...

So in getting the boat ready for the weekend, I picked up a mooring pennant with my outboard. Only going about 1 knot, but it was enough to break the frame of the engine when the line went taught. Buzzkill. So we didn't get out until today because there was no wind. We did go out to one of the islands in the bay for lunch, though. Got big style points for coming into a crowded anchorage and dropping the hook without power. Lin and Larry Pardy have nothin' on me. Until I tried to leave. I forgot about trying to raise anchor by hand without an engine to break it free! Lunch was good though. Justin - O'day Owners' Web

Great Day On The Lake

Had a great sail today. The in-laws were down for the weekend and had never been on a sailboat. Weather was in the lower 90's, (a cool relief compared to the last few weekends), and about 10K wind. Put up a full main and a 150% and cruised down the lake and back up. Even had one of the power boat come by a snap a photo. Ben Allen Montgomery, AL "Wahoo" OD 26

How did I use my boat this weekend

My wife and youngest child sailed about 23 kt/m from St. Petersburg , FL to the Twin Dolphin Marina in Bradenton , FL. We were one of 18 boats from our Yacht Club that made the trip. Events for the 2 day stay were swimming in a great pool. sharing a coverdish supper. going to a Jimmy Buffet Lazer light Show. Great weather, with no rain and enough wind to sail at least half of the round trip distance.

A Little Bonding With My Boys

Did'nt actually leave the dock, as there was no wind and it was dreary and drizzly, but we had fun annyways. Friday night was me and my youngest, Omar, it was hot that day so we went for a night swim at a nearby beach. Woke up to do some fishing, taught him to cast with his $10 rod, dang if he didn't out cast me with my $200 graphite rod. Next night was my oldest boy Vincent, drowned some worms from the dinghy, had a BBQ and read lots of books together. I have to do that more often, very rewarding. No sailing but the boat served its purpose well as a platform for some quality time. Don

Sailing with my son

It was cloudy for most of the weekend, and the cold air reminded us that the season is coming to a close. My son, now 10, asked to go for a sail before locking up the boat for the weekend and heading home. I was first reluctant to go out with only a light wind but thought again how I used to force my kids to go sailing when they were younger. Although I did not get my hands on the tiller this weekend, I was very happy to hand it over to my 10 year old son who seems to thoroughly enjoy sailing. The CDI furler I put on last year also makes things really easy. I no longer need an experienced crew! I am thrilled that I don't need to struggle to get the kids to go out now..at least my son. If I had only bought a larger boat with hot and cold water and a shower... My wife would have really liked that. I do miss Casco Bay Maine, where I grew up and sailed for most of my life..and where I continue register and maintain my mooring. I'm stuck at the lake but should be happy that I am still sailing, and that my family will accompany me..

Tender on the Hudson

I had my 25 out on the Hudson over the holiday weekend. Monday the winds were steadily blowing at 20-25 and eventually climbed to hold 30. My boat is equiped with a furling genoa don't know the size but I'd guess its a 130. I began unfurling the sail and the wind took hold and pulled the sail all the way out before I could lock the furling line. The boat was instantly overpowered, she heeled way over, turned into the wind and stalled. I rolled in about a third of the sail because I had been told that any more and the sail is useless. It was still so overpowered that the boat was nearly impossible to control. (Even with the main let out so far it was bouncing on the pocket of wind blowing inside of the genoa!) At one point, the boat was heeled over rather dramatically, I was on the high side with the tiller under my chin -- then a gust and the boat went over even further and I felt the pressure fall off of the tiller completely. I don't think any of it was left in the water! Yikes! I rolled in even more of the genoa until there was at most 25% of the sail out. With the forward sail set that way, and the main sail let way out, the boat became managable but it was still tricky. I have heard that the 25 is "a bit tender." Is this typical of a 25' boat? Would most boats handle this way? I noticed that some of the larger, 30'-35', boats did not seem to have the same difficulty. Oh, and of course...I had a blast!
