Lazy Weekend

I work for a large newspaper (the Virginian Pilot) and I don't have weekends off. My vacation started Sunday night, so we rented a movie, took the two dogs down to the boat and had dinner and watched the movie. After that, we went back home because heavy rain was due the next day. Exciting, huh?

Boat?

When it is 107 degrees in the shade, I don't even think about going to the boat. The A/C can't even handle it and you have a heat stroke just walking to the end of the dock. Come on fall.

Hot Weekend

I replaced one of the top side vinyl stripes yesterday morning. I started at 9:00 AM and finished about 1 1/2 hours later. The heat and humidity were so bad that I was soaked doing a minor task. It was out of the question to go sailing in this heat. Hopefully things will cool off at the end of September.

On the hard!!!

I did not get to sail my H310 due to the lightning strike 3 weeks ago. The boat is still on the hard some 150 miles away. Still not sure whats going to happen with it. I did however, sail my Sunfish yesterday and I just got back from sailing my dad's O'day 22. I also partied big time at the dock the other night. Our marina had its yearly pig roast. I had a blast. So it hasn't been all that bad without the 310. Steve, s/v The Odyssey....

Another nice weekend

We do things alittle different here in mpls being on the river. No big water here. We went down on friday planning on a two hr. sail, then food and drinks at a local restaurant. Half way down it started to rain so scratch the sail and more time for food and drinks. Sat. we had some friends from 30 yrs. ago down for their first sail. They loved it, we had a great time. Sailed for 3-4 hrs. then up to the yacht club for steaks and drinks. Very nice day. After a good storm sat. night, sunday we had a relaxing morning, then went out for another 3 hr sail. Not as good as sat. but still very nice. Sunday evening we hooked up with another couple from our marina, had a nice bbq and drinks at the club. Stayed over to monday, a.m. packed up and drove home. We have spent the last year + bring our 87 hunter back to life and are finally enjoying her. Had a great weekend and look forward to the next one. Craig

Jimmy Buffett on Thursday

The best part about the extended weekend was that I got to see JB on Thursday at the Tweeter Center (a.k.a. Great Woods). His show was one of the better of the summer tour. My son attended both shows and said that Saturday was better than Thursday. But, to answer the question for the rest of the weekend, New England Weather did us in. Narragansett Bay was rainy and foggy on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. So I literally stayed home and caught up on some reading and some yard work. Made a short trip to the boat to check on things. Maybe next weekend will be better.

Washed Out

It rained daily, so the boat stayed put, I read the latest edition of "Sail" magazine, and tried to talk my wife into buying a bigger boat. Bruce S/V Off Call

Good weekend, dodged thunderstorms

Despite a warm and humid weekend with occassional thunderstorms we enjoyed the weekend. Spent Friday and Saturday at the marina, worked on the boat a variety of maintenance duties, scrubbed the waterline and hull sides, (Looks pretty now for awhile) swam in the pool at the clubhouse in between thunderstorms. Cooked dinner on the grill on the stern rail. It was relatively cool at night with fans going. Left the dock on Sunday morning and sailed up the Pamlico River to the town of Washington, NC. only about 10 miles. Still a threat of thunderstorms so we decided not to go any great distance. We motorsailed with the jib only in light wind. I talked with the local Coast Guard Station (Hobucken) on the VHF in regards to a report of a vessel in distress and taking on water, in the vicinity of Wichards Beach which was right where we were traversing. We did not hear the distressed vessel calling while the CG was attempting to communicate so I supposed it was a hoax unfortunately coming from somewhere other than Whichards Beach. Or maybe there is a Richards beach or something similar somewhere. We could not hear the conversation from the distressed vessel despite our VHF antenna 56 feet above the water. (We can hear Norfolk, Hatteras, Ft. Macon and several other CG stations.) There were several jet skis and a variety of fishing / pleasure boats in the vicinity of Wichards beach but we observed no vessels in distress and reported this to the CG station. The Coast Gaurd station asked for my geographic coordinates, asked my name and the name of the owner of my vessel etc. One ski boat was disabled with engine problems but he advised that he did not call Coast Guard. Some CG Auxillary vessels came out and searched the area and did not find any vessels in distress. Continued on to the the Municipal marina in Washington, NC and tied up there for free about 1:30 PM. Free electricity dockage and water. Not a bad deal ! Docking was sort of embarrassing as there was a current running and I wound up in the slip next to the one I initially was aiming for. We manage to get tied up, set bow and stern lines and a spring line fore and aft. Janet made lunch and we just lazed around on the boat there for awhile. Talked with another captain who had helped me tie up and admired his vessel. It was a 1957 Matthews wooden cabin cruiser partially restored. I went for a walk around town, many businesses closed for the weekend. I made reservations at a nice restaurant in town, "The Rumor Mill" for 7:30 that evening since we had lunch between 1:30 and 2, 7:30 seemed like a good time for dinner. Continuing my walk I stopped at a local waterfront restaurant / watering hole named Snookies. and had a beer. Cancelled out the calories I burned on the walk. The weather started looking like a thunderstorm again so headed back to the boat where I found Janet reading sail magazines and relaxing. Waited out the passing thundershower, a regular occurrence this weekend. Talked with some other boat captains that had tied up including our friend Jerry aboard "Geremander". We were the only sailboat although sailboats often tie up here. Walked to dinner at 7:15 and enjoyed a nice meal. Janet had a glass of Chardonnay, Ceasar salad , 1/2 lb. boiled shrimp with mashed potatos and steamed vegetables. I had a vegetable pasta dish and a garden salad. We shared desert which was premium vanilla ice cream between 2 Kalua cookies with chocolate sauce and whipped cream. We had a nice chat with the restautrant owner and then walked back to the boat and turned in. The vehicular traffic going by on the waterfront kept us awake for awhile but it quieted down around 10:30 PM. Had a nice sleep but awoke at 6:00AM to the banging sound of dumpsters being emptied nearby and the backup beepers on the garbage trucks. Hey guys it's a holiday weekend ! Got up and made some great gourmet coffee and watched the weather on TV. It is overcast but looks like no thunderstorms for the next 3 hours at least not where we are. We decided to head back to home port so untied and gracefully backed out of the slip and got underway at 7:30 AM. (Nobody watching this time). The wind was out of the SSE about 10 to 15 and we had a good reaching sail the 10 miles back down the river.Got back to Pamlico Plantation on Broad Creek about 9:15 and got into the slip nicely in the crosswind now picking up to a steady 15 kts. Unloaded the boat, packed the car and drove home.

Left Thursday and came home Fri

Went for my first overnighter in my new Hunter 42. Left in 100 ft fog, by the light of radar, and the navigation skills of good friend. Arrived in Northport, LI. We anchored, and marveled in the extreme beauty available just hours away from NYC. Traveled home the next day and beat the Labor Day rush.

Went Sailing (thank god for radar)

Had one week of vacation left and the kids had an extra week of vacation due to school construction so off we went last weekend. Went to Falmouth (15+ on the nose), then off to Nantucket in 6+ footers. Had a great week and then came home sunday and monday in thick fog. Thank god for radar and GPS. Russell S/V Allie Kat

Broen foot spoils plans

My wife fell down the companionway of our 380 on Thursday night spoiling our weekend plans. Fortunately she only broke one foot. Funny I bought the 380 for many reasons but one thing I liked the most was it has the best companionway on any sailboat that size. Nice even steps, curved at sides for heeling, not to steep. Oops just that quick our weekend ended. Thankfully it wasn't more severe and we'll be out in two weeks after the Newport Boat Show! Bob Knott H380

Little of Everything

Took Friday afternoon off and sailed her to small harbor up the coast. Great starborad reach under sunny/cool skies. Left her on the mooring Saturday and climbed back aboard that evening following friends' wedding reception at nearby facility. Tended a few odd jobs aboard Sunday morning until there was air to sail with and did just that for the next six hours. Slept aboard Sunday night too and had the courage (and hunger) to brave the alcohol stove again; best beef stew I'd had that day! Found a leak in the port V-berth port at 0230 in this morning's rain shower--another project in waiting. Went out for another afternoon sail and beat my way back home in 15-20+ knots on the nose. All in all, one of the better sailing weekends we've seen this summer.

Crusin' in Florida

Spent a great weekend at Desto Point and then at Terra Ciea anchored behind Bird key. Winds were not particularly cooperative but the anchorages were wonderful. Big Bamboo, a Hunter 34 and Anthem a Legand 40 spent the days and evenings resting and enjoying those wonderful refreshments that go along with cruising. If your ever on the West Coast of Florida, be sure to see Desoto Point which is right at the entrance to the manatee river. For details on terra cia check out Clayborne Young's Cruising guide to the west coast of Florida. Its a little trick to get up the channel but the late evening bird show is spectacular.

Trial by Sea Storm

Went to Catawba Island on Lake Erie to pick up my new purchase (1985 Hunter 31) which I had purchased after reading many of the fine reviews on this web site. My last sail boat was a daysailer and haven't had a boat in the last 12 years. Had to sail her about 120 miles (NE) back to my home port into NE winds. First day was great, second day was winds of 25 knots with 6-10 foot waves. The boat handled wonderfully and am glad to be in home port after a very very rough day.

Fireworks!?!? Summer?!?

Rain and Fog all weekend long. It was even worse on Monday(small craft advisory). I spent the only good day , friday, cleaning up the boat so we could go out(ha ha). Newport's fireworks were postponed from Saturday to Sunday because of the rain. Sunday night it was so foggy that when they finally decided to do the fireworks you could not see any of them. I am still waiting for summer to begin. Last night it went down to 38 degrees so I guess I will be waiting for next June! I am hoping for some nice weekends this fall. The weather man is predicting rain for this upcoming weekend, alright!

Typical Lake Erie....

four completely different days. Fortunately we picked Friday to sail with the grandkids(and their dog). Warm with light breezes, enough to do 5 knots with the boat flat. First mate and I stayed over on the boat. Saturday morning fog and NE winds up to 18 knots made for 6-7 knots at 20 degrees heel, seemed like flying compared to Friday. Two different but really fun sailing days. Hot on Sunday, cool on Monday with big winds and big waves. Must be when Steve took his new boat home to Ashtabula. We were at home catching up on projects.
