How crucial is the height of lifeline stanchions ?

Hey, ALL! We all know how expensive the storing/mooring a boat can be. In the light of that I wanted to try to fit my Mac22 into my garage (at least for the Winter) My garage is 27 ft long (I know...lucky me :O)) But the problem is that the height of the entrance is less than the total height of the Mac on a trailer. Even if I deflate the tralier tires, I would be still about 4 inches too high...DARN. Such boat height is caused by lifeline stanchions. I understand that the lifelines are kind of important for safety, but what about the height..would it really matter if I have them trimmed 4-5 inches???? What do you think? . Any input is appreciated! . doktorpalka@mail.ru . Thanks, Alex

Around here there is a debate

as to the value of the lifelines on little boats like ours. Many racers take them off completely (and if I remember correctly the original 22s didn't even have them). I think it depends somewhat on where you sail. I think they are very important for offshore sailing, as are jacklines and harnesses. I suppose you could debate it for smaller waters...although I would leave mine on. My guess is that cutting them down would not be a horrible idea...if you are nervous about it you could replace them with the style Mac used on the 26Cs...the stanchion tube can be removed from the base.

too short

too short could make them into trip lines, try bending over to the amount you want to cut off and see if you could live with the lowering. if your drive is paved, you might build a pair of dollies to rest the trailer on after removing the wheels to lower the boat while allowing it to be rolled into the garage.

Oh common Bruce...

those cheesy little things are already "trip lines". I think getting rid of them would probably prevent a whole lot of damage if they ever got really used. Mine are stock and come up to about mid-calf. Just pulling your chain a little...I agree they are important and you always give good serious advice.

Hey...they are very important. Where would you hang your fenders from?

26 style bases

I didnt realize they used 1 piece units on the early boats. my 26d has a base and a pole. A bolt holds them in place. I remove one side every time I put the trailer away. -I find them most helpful when I'm on dry land, working on the boat, or hanging bumpers and securing other stuff. -I'd hate to depend on them with my life... pretty sure they would pull out the fglass and backing. yeah, I'd cut them down or replace with the new style
