Does anyone have suggestions for getting the spiders off the boat? I would think that a no-pest strip would work in the cabin, and I am considering using a bug spray along the rub rail. I am working on the assumption that is where most of them live anyway. However some are found in the sail cover, which I suspect I have to live with because I don't want any chemicals around my sails. Also I don't want to do anything that will make the top sides slippery or sticky so I have not done anything yet. I would like to know what others think or have done about spiders. Thanks Bill Leathen

Not a perfect solution but
You can stick fabric softener sheets such as Bounce in the sail cover. Also, cedar oil down below helps. You can also insect spray your docklines. Some people let loose with a bug bomb down below. Topside you can spray but who needs to be sailing a toxic dump site? Or you just learn to cohabitate with the pesky little fellows.

At Night
You can go up on deck at night and spray the little pests with spider kill or similiar sprays. Use a flashlight to spot them. During the daytime they hide under the toe rail and similiar spots.

Moth balls...
Spiders don't like 'em. Put a few in mesh bags (cut up sections of your wife's old panty hose) and hang 'em in the places where spiders seem to like setting up housekeeping. Change 'em once a month.

I use moth balls in my anchor locker and sail cover to keep out the mud daubers and wasps. However, the spiders don't even know that they are there. I haven't found anything short of a flamethrower that will discourage them.

A flame thrower is the way to go. Just avoid the sails and propane tanks. I hit under the rub rail/toe rail with bug spray every few weeks and go hunting at night like Jim and it seems to do the trick. The sails stay relatively free of critters with this method.

We have a terrible spider problem at our marina. I use this stuff called Suspend (www.pestproducts.com). It is a concentrate and you mix 1 oz to gal. of water. It is the only thing that I have found the will work long term and does not wash off (we have lots of rain in New Orleans). This stuff is about $75 for a quart, but I have been using it for 3 years and have about 1/2 left. I put it in a garden spray an spray everything, sails bimini, toe rail, lockers, etc. I'm not sure about pets.

It will also keep your locker fresh your bedding nice. hold screws for you when your working. gret for cleaning. and a bunch of other great things. bounce sheets are way cool!

I buy el-cheapo cat flea collars at Wally-World (Wal-Mart) and put them on the stanchions and stren rail seat. They last for about half a Summer, then you have to replace them.

Missouri has lots of spiders too. (I try not to be the first one down the dock in the morning.) I bought the no-name brand drier sheets from Walmart and put it in every storage area of the boat. Smells good. No spiders. In a previous forum, someone suggested not storing exterior canvas covers in the cabin as they introduce lots of bugs. We keep all canvas in the cockpit locker while sailing and that also helped cut down on problems.

and for wasp?
Ok, will the bounce strips work for wasp too? I have knocked 3!! hives out from under my engine where you lift it to pull it out of the water. If I'm out of town for a couple of weeks those things build a new one while I'm gone. The kids freak out every time we go to the boat. thanks. David (sea monkeys)

For Wasps
Use either no pest strips or moth balls. I have several small mesh bags that are placed inside the sail cover. As long as they have moth balls in them, no wasps or mud daubers. However, the spiders are not bothered by them. No pest strips work also, but you can't tell when they need to be replaced unless you discover a wasp nest.
