How big is your wheel?

When we were out sailing the other day, it seemd like the wheel in our '90 V32 was just a little too big in the cockpit. I measured it later and found that it's 36" across. Does anyone know if this is the standard size for the boat? I somehow think something 30" or 32" would work just as well and give more room around the wheel. Any comments?

36"

Not sure if it's the original wheel that came with the boat, but our '90 Vision-32 also sports a 36" wheel. The wheel does get in the way quite a bit, we remove it whenever the boat's not moving. We either bungee-cord it onto the base of the mast, or store it below when it makes sense. My favorite seating spot when under sail is on the ledge of the cockpit, with my face and shoulder hanging out, into the wind. The large wheel allows me to reach the helm... I could probably use a smaller wheel (I don't see why not), but then it would rob me of this seating arrangement, which I wouldn't trade away!! Cheers, -j-

Preference, I Guess!

I have a Legend 37 and so does a friend of mine. I have a 41" wheel and his is about 32". I think it is the buyer's option when the boat is purchaed new as to what size wheel they want to get. They all work, but the size offers different comfort/leverage.

I know what you mean...

I sit in the same spot! I wish I could try out a smaller wheel to see what it's like. I'm going to check it out at my yacht club to see if anyone has a smaller wheel that might fit that I could try.. Tom

me too!!!

I just traded in my old H-27 for a beautiful 1994 Hunter 29.5, and, the wheel is HUGE!! Response is different too. I guess I'll just have to adjust...

TOM, JAMES' APPROACH IS THE SAME...

as mine. I prefer the larger wheel even though it cramps the cockpit. It allows you to sit on the windward side coaming under sail with your face into the salt spray and wind while steering the boat. At the dock it is easy to remove the wheel and store it on the pulpit rail with a hanger or strap if you need the additional room. Terry

30" Wheel....

I have a 30" wheel on my '89 H28 that I would love to trade for a larger wheel. The cockpit on the H28 T's off and would accomodate a larger wheel nicely. If your interested let me know at terrance.maloney@cpships.com.
