Do any of you periodically go through your gps and other onboard electronics and clear obsolete trips and waypoints?

Tracks & Waypoints

I download tracks and clear them off the handheld (Garmin GPSMap 76Cx) after each trip. We leave the waypoints on the unit, although we have saved all the waypoints to Mapsource, so I could delete a bunch of them that are rarely used.

Did you know that you can click "Display in Google Earth" while your tracks are loaded into Mapsource and produce something like this?

It takes a bit of fiddling in GE to get a nice display and save it so the file can be reloaded but it's a nice way to share your trip with friends. If anyone is interested, I'll describe the steps sometime.

For my Furuno GP-31 I wrote a little program that allows me to up/down load routes and waypoints. So, I keep all but my current routes and waypoints on the computer and the GPS is always "clean".

Because I use a laptop for navigation with almost limitless capacity for storage I have kept the waypoints, routes and tracks of EVERY voyage I have made in the last 15 years or so. I flash the routes up time and again and re-use them. It is a great comfort to know each one is a safe route with no hazards such as buoys, sandbars, headlands or rocks in the way.
Also I have named and kept every waypoint I used on each route so now it is a simple matter to make new routes in the sure knowledge that every waypoint really is where I want it to be and in sufficiently deep water at all states of tide. I have over 800 of them and when constructing a new route I simply pick the ones I need. They can be made to appear on the chart and are also viewable as a table sorted alphabetically or by Latitude or by Longitude.
In fact people say my boat knows where to go to such an extent that I hardly need to be aboard!

Your boat sounds like the spaceship in the famed David Bowie song that also knew which way to go :>)
