Does anyone have experience or advice about replacing house batteries in a Hunter 380? (they are not a standard size not we're not sure where to locate them in BC Canada if possible)Thanks!

More Info

Give us info what year your 380 and more important what type model
and info what type of battery how they install and where on your boat.
My 07 H-36 when new were 2-4D's:eek::eek:yes really heavy hard to move
and they were in a special battery box I think Hunter made and in port side cockpit with FP Gen and my boat listed to port.
After a few years maybe 5 years they needed replace thank goodness I changed to 4-6-volt T-105's and moved to them under my starboard salon seats and be
there since 2011 and no more list.
So you could add what ever batteries fit better.

You wouldbe better served replacing the based upon an assessment of your typical elec demand rather than what fits in the space.

There is no preconceived best size and configuration for a battery bank. It all rests in a combination of your individual power needs, the size in capacity to store power of the bank and the frequency in opportunities to recharge. Someone with an inboard generator will not need as large a bank as someone crossing oceans without one. Determine your type of sailing whether it is day-sailing or multi day passage making. Conduct a power survey to determine your usage in amps for a 24 hour period. Such a survey may allow you to determine how many total amps you may need in your battery bank to stay out there for your usually desired number of days. Do not overbuild, choose your activity requirements that represent 80%+ of your boat's use. In other words do not size your bank for a long trip that you may only take once or twice a year. Larger banks cost more, weigh more, occupy more space and may require costly upgrades to your recharging capabilities. Also batteries benefit from some deep discharge cycles and too large a bank may not allow batteries to exercise accordingly. As far as configuration whether to use 12V or 6V batteries, a starter and house banks that is a personal choice.

I forget when I bought my H380 but probably around 1999--it still had the fiberglass arch. However, I do remember putting in four 6 volt batteries in the starboard side just forward of the galley area. We did put them in battery boxes but were not able to use the covers of those boxes. I just strapped them in--it did make for checking the water level rather easy though.

MY engine battery was on the port side under the settee and hooked to the solar set up. It always needed water because of that.

Hope this helps.
