The old tank finally rusted out and we have removed it and ordered the new one (original equipment Seaward). I disassembled the old one and removed it through the starboard lazerette but noticed that an intact unit would not fit back through the lazerette. The only practical alternative is to return through the bulkhead passage under the galley sink. To do so will require slightly enlarging that passage. If you have ever replaced your tank and have any sage advice regarding any part of this job, I would appreciate hearing it.

Doug: That is how you get the water heater in and out. I think that there is a removable panel aft of the sink. You will need to remove hoses too. I did not do mine, but the fellow that did it did NOT need to enlarge any opening.

Another thought
In replaceing my hot water heater I found I could take off the outside shell and insulation,which allowed the tank to fit through the opening. I then angled the cover and was able to re-assemble with the insulation in the lazerette. Had the streach my arms a bit but it worked. Good luck Ian

Only Way Out & In
The aft panel under the sink is removeable by going into the starboard lazerette and removing six screws. You don't have to inlarge anything. You also need to disconnect the sink's drain hose and the hot & cold water lines. By the way, The fuel tank comes out this way also. So if your tank has never been cleaned, you may want to look into that at the same time.

I removed the panel which separated the water heater from the undersink storage space and removed and replaced thru this opening, which was the only way I can imagine doing this. I didn't replace this panel because it makes it so much easier to access the water heater from under the sink. I had leaks at the hose connections after it all heated up and cooled off a few times. Had to tighten several times over a few months. Sure was easier to monitor leaks without this panel in the way. Good luck.
