I'm finally wet this week, and started testing out all the systems in the 85 Hunter 31 I bought in December. First thing I noticed when I plugged in the hose to check the fresh water system (I was careful to make sure the pressure wasn't too much) was that the water started pouring from the front of the hot water heater (under the galley sink). Same thing happened using the pressure water from the tank. Upon further inspection, the water heater is definintly rusted through. West Marine has a force-10 6 gallon hot water heater for 269 - I've looked online and its cheaper at 229-239 elsewhere, but with shipping,I figure its a negligible difference. Question is, how dificult is that to install, especially given the connection to the engine's cooling system?

Easy

... assuming that's what was in there to begin with. I did mine on my 40.5. Hooking it up was easy. Disassembling the salon seating moulding for access was a pain. Rick D.

Make it easy on yourself.

Kevin: Why don't you make it easy on yourself. Just use the same unit that came with the boat. I believe that it was a Seward unit. I thought I saw them adv. at Sailnet for something like $170. The old one should come out under the galley sink. Be sure that you get the model number off the old one. There are two models that are nearly the same, but the controls are on different sides.

Just replaced mine

I just replaced mine about 2 weeks ago on a 1984 Hunter 31. Not much to it. Some tips Mine was a Seaward 6 gal. rear feed. Got mine at Boat U.S. for $ 209.00 I think they are running a $10 $20 $30 sale right now so it would save you a couple of bucks. Mine pulled right out from under the galley sink. Tip, I had trouble disconnecting the heater hoses from the engine. If you disconnect the water supply first, then disconnect the 4 screws that secure it to the floor board you can move it forward to give you a little more room to disconnect the heater hose. Good luck.

COLD WATER HEATER

I dont get it. Why would you need to heat hot water?

Hi Wild Bill, the heater is used for storing ...

hot water heated by the engine while it's running or heating cold water while connected to shore power, as hot water is depleted from the tank. Terry
