Hot Water Heater Rear Heat Exchanger Plumbing

When I bought the boat almost a year ago, the PO said the hot water tank only got lukewarm while motoring. Well, I started a winter project on the boat that sent me down a path to clean the cooling system and replace the hoses. The hot water heater's rear heat exchanger was fed off the thermostat bypass circuit. The supply to the heat exchanger in the hot water tank was fed by the bypass outlet on the cooling water pump, and the return line returned to the thermostat housing. Is this how this is supposed to be plumbed? It was done with a 3/8" fuel line that was later coupled with a 5/8" exhaust hose.

I also found that the supply line was completely clogged with brown sludge, and when I disconnected it from the hot water tank, the inlet side was completely clogged with plastic bits and heavy calcification/corrosion. I attempted to clear it out, but it seemed to go beyond the inlet nipple into the heat exchanger. When I disconnected the outlet side, it was bone dry.

Replace the hoses feed to the water heater. On my c36 M35B they were 5/8" hose. They were reduced from 1/2" adapter. View my album images on water heater replacement and filling the hoses with antifreeze. Your description of hose connections seems correct.

The hot water system consists of 2 separate loops. The raw side that is discharged and the closed fresh side. The fresh side is cooled by the exchanger and feeds hot coolant thru the hot water tank. Both side are subject to occlusion by foreign objects. Scrooges that attempt to SAVE old glycol when draining their system often unknowingly introduce FOD into their systems.. Antifreeze that is too old will sludge up..
If you have tracked sludge filled hoses to the inlet of your hot water heater, then there high probability that the coil with in has also sustained a crud occlusion. It might bt time to get ahead of the problems and replace the tank and hoses..
If you live in a winterization climate, consider a bypass manifold on the tank. Turning 3 valves determines the season.. easy to winterize..
