Can any one tell me how to route the plumbing from the engine to the hot water heater it looks like the P.O. disconected this for some reason. I am assuming that I should go from the thermostat to the water heater and back to the mixing elbow but I am not sure so any help would be appreciated.

This is going to be expensive

I also have a raw water cooled yanmar and was disapointed to find it can't make hot water. Seeing as the boat has hot water plumbing and all. If you are on a mooring and you need hot water, Diesel,CNG or Propane are the only real options. Electric (battery to inverter) will distroy your battery in short order. There are 12 volt water heater elements on e-bay but the same rule applies. Too much current. Diesel is safe convenient will also heat the boat (Espar is a supplier of these). They are also expensive. Converting the motor to fresh water cooling is always an option. Sorry. There's no cheap way out that I know of. If you find one please post it.

engine runs too cool for really hot water

If you check the Yanmar tech manual, I believe the engine is not supposed to run hotter than 100 degrees (raw water) that generally is not sufficient to get the water very hot at all. A gas LNG heater (on demand ) would work best
