Anyone know how to hot wire a bilge pump to my battery. Does the wire go to the positive, negative a nuetral switch? I'm electrically challenge so a basic instruction for the hot wire is appreciated from anybody with electric knowledge, thanks.

With a Switch

I assume you are going to wire an automatic switch in line so the bilge pump will not run all the time. That is what will happen if you "hot" wire it directly to the battery. You will need a hot wire from the positive side of the battery and a negative wire from the ground side of the battery. Simply wire the switch and bilge pump to the wires, usually red for the hot and black or white for the negative side. 12 guage will be enough for smaller pumps.

Fuse in hot wire from bilge pump

You may be aware of this, but it is important to have the correct size fuse along the hot wire from the bilge pump to protect the pump motor.

If!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you have not already purchased the pump, they are available in auto-on/off (when unattended), and manuel-on/off activated by manuel switch. The instructions are pretty good. As someone stated previously, hot goes to hot on the bat. Neg goes to neg on the bat. The auto switch will keep it from running all the time unless you want it to.

Just one more quick note...

The fuse is to protect the wiring. All you need is a small inline fuse on the positive (hot) wire and the fuse should be as close as possible to the battery. I found a chart and the link is below. A 12 gauge wire can carry 10A for up to 20 feet. Just a guess but 10A fuse should do just fine.

Don't forget the float switch

All Rule bilge pumps have wiring diagrams on the packages. Read the instructions. Stu
