Back on 8-27-04 I posted a message “Yiks, almost sank the boat”. Well I have finally had time to take the advice and fix the leak before the next big trip. I put a jack under the front of the Keel and put a small amount of pressure on it before loosing the bolt inside the cabin. Well the keel kept moving up as I raise the jack? Well the keel finally stop raising and I had a small amount of weight on it. I then climbed up into the cabin and the bolt was standing about 1.5-2” above the plate. Don’t know how much tread is on this bolt but I would have to think that was very close to the end!!! Then the terrible thought of that bolt walking itself out 10 miles out in the gulf with 4-5 ft wave scared the SH#@ out of me. I got a good bead of 5200 under the bolt and tightened it down. I also put a good bead around the compression post. Hope to put the boat in the water and check out the leak before the yearly trip to the Texas cost. I guess this is something to keep an eye on in the future!! Thanks Dale

Question

Dale, Thanks for sharing your encounter with the keel bolt. Can you elaborate on what we're seeing in this photo? I'm trying to imagine some sort of pivot bolt but it appears that this bolt is in a vertical plane. What does it do? David S/V Abundance Hunter 260

Dwg of H260 centerboard bracket

Attached is an excerpt from the H260 manual showing a side view of the CB and the bracket. The top of the bracket is held in place by a bolt that comes down through the compression post base plate. Fair winds, Tom

Thank you, for the pic from the Manual. It shows the DWL well below the bolt, but that is where the H2O was flooding in to my boat. Did a search and noticed that it is a common lead. Crazy Dave is the one who posted the idea on sealing both compression post and the keel plate bolt with 5200. I hope the 5200 under the bolt head will act as locktight.
