I am putting a new sail on my Hunter 40.5 and the sailmaker wants to know which side to put the sail cover on the furling jib. If I put the sailcover on the Port side the sail is furled in by rotating the drum clockwise (the single furling line--the sail is pulled out by the sheets--runs along the port toe rail and then angles off to the right to accomplish the clockwise rotation). This is the set up for the existing sail. On the other hand a sister ship in the harbor furls in the sail by rotating the drum counter clockwise, so the sail cover is located on the Starboard side. The furling line also runs along the left toerail but does not cross over at a 45 degree right angle and turn the drum clockwise but goes along the left side of the boat into the drum and thus the counter clockwise pull. (On the 40.5 the furling system is below deck under in the chain and locker area). It may be 6 of one and 1/2 a dozen of the other but I thought I would check and see what others have. The boat I have had a replacement 155% on it that I am replacing with a smaller headsail and it may have come with sail cover on port side necessitating a clockwise rotation of the drum to get the sail cover on the outside.
