Should this happen? It is from 2008 and I have not sailed that much. I tighten the halyard in strong breeze, but it seems to weak designed to me. See pictures

I have a couple of questions. Why are you tightening the halyard in strong winds?, and are you referring to a specific 2008 model / length of Hunter sailboat? My guess is you have totally fatigued the fitting by pushing it beyond its design. The common rule is to properly set your halyard and never touch it from there on...it should have some equal flex fore and aft...set so tight where there is no more flex to aft may be the cause of your furling damage.

Cheers!

I've got a Hood Seafurler 5 on my H36. I regularly sail in 30 plus knot winds on Lake Michigan (not by choice) but as Kite Runner says I don't touch the halyard and only tighten until there is just a little more tension then what was needed to raise the sail. I would call Hood tech support - they were very helpful when I had problems with my furler and even sent spare parts free of charge.

One other question I would ask is if you are furling the sail using the winch with a loaded sail. This would put some serious forces on the furler that it is not meant to take.

Good point Ken! Furling the Genoa should always be done by hand...any resistance will usually NOT be felt via the winch...instead of being under load it is best to take the load off the furler momentarily to reef or bring the sail completely in again, by hand. I'm speaking of a 36 Hunter here...anyway, that's my way of handling the procedure, I'm sure there are others that use the winch. Also, on my 2009 Hunter 36 the furling line is very light and not as HD or thick as the sail sheets...a bit of a clue maybe?
