I have original Hood furler on my 1992 30T that seems to be difficult to operate. I am not convinced that it is as high up as it should be since the pennant is still not tight at the drum/foot. The angle between the upper swivel and the halyard seems to be too great to allow the thing to raise another inch or two that would tighten up the pennant (and there is still an inch or so of sail that is not in the extrusion. I am blaming all of this on the sail being difficult to furl (or at least get started from the cockpit). It unfurls easily, but needs the winch to get it started furling. I have broken the turning block at the base of the mast trying to raise it more and now have to replace that...anyone know the part number for that? I found it on the Rig-Rite site, seems to be Z-272 or Z-275 depending on the 8 mm or 10 mm stud size. Any help out there?

The model number of the furler would be helpful. Manuals are available online, and they have parts diagrams. Then call Pompanette in Tampa, and ask for Marti.
These problems may be completely unrelated. I've had them. Difficult hoisting can be a dirty groove, lack of luff lube, a bad halyard deflector lead angle, oversized or stiff halyard, or a jammed masthead sheave. It can be several of these combined and is probably unrelated to the furling function. Hard furling at the beginning can be not enough base turns on the drum, trying to furl up-wind, or even bad bearings (unfurling is always easier).

Unless it has been replaced, you probably have the continuous line Hood 810 like we have. A short luff should still allow the base to tighten up. I had to replace the rivet(s) at the top swivel bearing once. That might be a reason it's jamming. Just guessing. As far as difficulty furling, mine also is hard to get started. The centering clamp fell out in pieces from the bottom drum and into the anchor locker. I replaced it so it furls again, but it is still hard to get started. I'm think I may need to change my technique some and take some of the load off of the headsail before I try to start furling it.

I actually have the 707 SL. I found the installation manual in a stack of old papers and there are several things I can see were not done by the prior owner that I can try. They suggest de-coring the first third of the line and placing more rolls on the drum then I have placed. It was installed by a real Hunter dealer so I am hoping it was done correctly. Still seems too low but tightening just broke a block so I suppose I have to go up there and make sure things are lined up OK...hate that ascent, but I guess that is sailing.
