I have a 1977 C-30 with an older roller furler that has a "spool" design and not a "drum" design. That is, there is a continuous line that loops around the base of the furler 3/4 of a turn and back to the cockpit. Does anybody know if there's an upgrade to this design so I can get a modern "drum" style? Reefing with the old design is difficult. Allen Schweitzer s/v Drambuie Hull #632

Yes there is

Go to www.pompanette.com (click on related link below). I changed my 915LD (line drive) to 900SL (single line) furling on my C36 - you'll likely need the 810LD to 800SL drum for your C30... you just replace the drum and use the existing extrusions. Allows you to reef the headsail without the line slipping. It works great and is a lot less money than replacing with a whole new furler. Best of luck! Trevor S/V Dunoon C36 #640

I was thinking

I have the same 810 ld furler, which i cant stand. I have made changes to the furler that have resulted in increased performance like: I used 2 4" tangs and twisted them 90 degrees, bolted them to the bottom of the extrusion and the plate on the stem. This alt doesnt allow the extrusion to rotate, keeping the fairleads inplace. The other is a hole saw blank drilled from starboard for the centering bearing instead of the 6 part system. I dont remember which size but i think it was a 2". The old part was too big and would fall off the lower swage. I thought about selling my old hood for about $500 and getting a new CDI ff9 for about the same cost as a refit for the hood $490? The CDI frees up a haylard , the haylard wont wrap around the stay, and the pvc wont dirty my new genoa, Like the hood. See now why i dont like the hood??
