Hood 810 LD Furler (Drum Maintenance/ Replacement)

Hello all:

I have a 1984 Catalina 30 Tall Rig and have begun having issues with the rolling furler, it is a Hood 810 LD system and is now completely jammed when I'm trying to furl in my Genoa. The continuous line is old and frayed and I want to replace it with new line. However I need to open the drum, replace the ball-bearings and just do general maintenance. Does anyone have any knowledge of this process or recommendations.

Thank you so much!

Unfortunately, according to Hood Yacht Systems and Pompanette, the parent company, parts are no longer available for the 810 LD system. I ran into this when attempting to rebuild or convert mine to a single line system. I ended up replacing the whole furler.

It is possible that once you remove the frayed line and the chafe left behind you will be able to get the furler to function. The maintanence on the furler may have been ignored from many years. Our climate here can let dirt and grime accumulate in the units. A good flushing with a dab of dawn liquid soap and a hose sprayer can do wonders to free up the mechanisum and get the bearings working.

You should consider if the cleaning/refurbishing does not resolve the problem, replacement may be necessary. Ancient hardware can make safely sailing your boat an issue. I replaced a problem profurler on my boat with a Harken MkIV. It has made sail management a breeze.
