I am thinking about getting a Catalina 25. (late 70's or early 80's with a swing keel). I currently own a Hunter 23. I need more cabin space, trailable, better in heavier winds and under $10,000. What are the pros and cons of the boat? Is the change worth it? Thanks

You might want to go to the Catalina 25/250 association web page. They are a wealth of info and actually a great bunch! The link is to the homepage!

Great Boat, but Trailerable?

Lee - I sailed an '81 C25 with the swing keel on the Potomac River in Washington, DC for a year and I loved the boat. Lots of room (the poptop was a plus but I seldom used it) and great sailing characteristics. I moved up to a C30 here on the West Coast but would go back to a 25 in a minute for river sailing/gunkholing. But I really don't see it as a trailerable boat -- I didn't trailer it, but I had it commercially moved from the Maryland shore to DC and it was a major event for the marina yard to raise the mast. I can't imagine doing it for an afternoon sail or even a weekend. On the other hand if by "trailerable" you mean taking her out in the winter for storage (i.e., only dropping/raising the stick twice a year) I'd say she rates a serious look. Be sure to check the pivot pin and winch/pendant assembly on any boat you look at to make sure any necessary repairs/upkeep have been done. Good luck! Mike Turner SY Amity C30 Long Beach, CA
