I have a 94' four stroke Honda 8hp that won't idle at low rpm's. When I set the throdle to the shift position it stalls. It runs fine at Start and any position between start and fast. I have checked the oil the plugs are not coated and are burning clean. I have not taken off the air cleaner or what looks like an air cleaner to see if it is dirty. Has anyone had any simliar problems. This motor is new to me. It came with the boat. Carl s/v Wind Shadow

Is the choke all the way in?

I also have a 94 Honda 4 stroke 8HP that came with the boat. When I first got it, it was behaving like yours. It didn't seem to want to idle in gear. I later discovered that when I pushed in the choke, it was only going in half way. The boat had not been used in quite a while and the linkage was really stiff. After freeing it up, it's run great. Hopefully it's something simple like that. Paul 1974 Catalina 27 http://community.webshots.com/album/14287993qauQVQbYXp

Idle problem

I have an older Honda 9.9 hp (Model 100) and had an idle problem. There is an idle speed adjustment(screw) and an idle mixture screw near the carburator. On my motor, I recall that the mixture screw is about 3 1/2 turns open and then you fine turn to get optimum idle. I would check the linkage to see if there are bends etc. However, the real problem was in the fuel pump in my case, the TINY filter(about the size of pencil eraser) had gummed up and was starving the system for gas. There are rebuild kits(diaphrams, filters etc.) for my Honda and I'm sure it is all available for yours, which is much newer. There are manuals available for the motor and I'd suggest that you make the investment. Hope this helps.

fuel connection

Carl, I am not familiar with the honda but on may motors the cause of poor idling is in the fuel connection where the hose meets the motor. If the "o" ring goes bad it does not pull fuel at an idle. r.w.landau

Thanks for help

I will check all the suggestions. If they don't pan out I guess its time to seek a professional in the area. I found one last night that seems to be pretty knowledgeable and had a few other suggestions. It is a pain when you can't get out of the habor but a bigger one when you can't get back in.
